 Solo Traveler - Banff

I am planning on travelling by myself, arriving in October 2012 - Any tips on good places to look at staying that will help me meet more people, I plan on staying and working the whole snow season.....possibly longer depending on how I feel end of the season.

I have never been to Canada let alone Banff, so not sure where I need to be in the way of location, but I am coming over mainly for snowboarding.

I would love to look at a place then look for jobs that could mean cheaper staffing accommodation,

a place that has a communal room and that is pretty social

any help would be great

thanks

70% of people in Banff are in the same position as you. Chances are unless you are rich you will end up in a shared house and in a job with people in the same stage of life.

Basically this means that after a week or so you will know loads of people in town! (As long as you don't barrack for Collingwood! ; ) )

Jobs are easy to find, housing can be tricky but don't let that worry you. basically as soon as you get here start looking for a place to live.

On a side note if you need gear what till you get here. Prices for snow related gear in Aus are crazy!

Banff is a great place to end up. I came for 4 months three and a half years ago!

Welcome Lanallama

Many employers do offer staff accommodation so if you are job hunting when you arrive that is something to consider as finding a place to live can be much more difficult than finding work.

When you first arrive staying at either of the three hostels in town - HI Alpine Centre, Samesun Backpackers or the Banff Y Mountain Lodge - will be the best places to start off. They often have packages for job hunters that include a week or two of accommodation and internet access. They also have common rooms, kitchens and a pub or restaurant which are great areas to meet people if you are new to town. Plus many people will be in a similar situation as you - newly arrived and looking forward to getting out on the slopes.

I also know that many Sushine Village ski hill staff members actually live at the HI Alpine Centre as part of the hostel is used for their staff accommodation.

Banff Life is an organzation you should take note of as well. They have a weekly pasta night where you can get a bowl of pasta for $1 plus meet loads of other young people living and working in Banff. They also offer avalanche awareness training, back country excursions and day trips to Calgary at very affordable prices. Their website is:
