Canadian Affair - anyone else had a bad experience?

I am so angry at Canadian Affair and their customer service, just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

We booked direct flights to Halifax in June a few weeks ago. Last week we were informed the flights was cancelled. Inconvenient, but within their right in their T&C. I called to ask about our options and was told either fly 3 days later or fly via Toronto. I asked if a refund was possible and was very clearly told no as they were offering the option to get to Halifax on the same day via Toronto. So I took that option. The next day I look at their T&C again and find out we should have been offered a refund, and what's more the connecting flight is an internal flight with a different company and we are now completely liable if something goes wrong, i.e. if there is another scheduled change, by either airline, and we miss a connection, or if there are delays. None of this was explained to us (I even asked the agent "can i find all these flight times on your website as I don't have a pen" and she said yes, which was untrue, you can only look up LGW to Toronto flight times).

Looking online, another scheduled change is very likely (Air Transat even confirmed to me that it is highly possible that flight times could change) - and this means we have to pay for any extra costs to change the internal flights. Same if we miss the connection during the journey. This makes me so angry because this was not explained to us - the impression they gave me was that we were booking a flight to Halifax where we could check in all the way to Haliax, not 2 separate flights, which I never would have done independently, knowing the risks. When we booked our original flight and paid money to Canadian Afffair, it was to Halifax. Now we have essentially only booked the flights to Toronto with them and our connecting flight with Westjet is our responsibilty.

I called customer services again to query this and of course they are not taking any responsibility. What's more, the customer services agent I originally spoke to is now claiming she did offer me a refund. It's unbelivable she can point blank lie! (Conveniently they do not record their calls).

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? And has anyone else had their flights from LGW to Toronto changed between booking and flying? I dread having to fork out extra money for this trip.

Thanks everyone.

Hi bel1979 ~

Canadian Affair has multiple threads here on TA. It is so unfortunate that this has happened to you. I do believe it is a fairly common complaint. If you type "Canadian Affair" into the search bar just above your avatar photo, you will get results for many threads about them. However, some people from the UK use them regularly with good success.

If your travel is on ONE TICKET from UK to Halifax, the responsibility for making that connection is not yours. You could check into that.

If I understand you correctly, you didn't ask the questions or read the fine print in the T&Cs before you booked with them. These glitches would have become apparent. I hope everything works out well for you.

Hello. Thanks for your reply. No, I have to admit I didn't fully read the conditions before speaking to them on the phone about the scheduled change. However, apart from being mislead as they witheld information (which I know is a bit teneous) they did actually lie about the refund. So when I asked 'can I get a refund' and was told 'no', even though their T&C say otherwise, surely this is very clearly wrong doing on their part? Unfortunately, as they say they don't record their calls it's their word against mine...

I think it's probably not one ticket so the responsibility is mine..... It's all such a shame, sours the while holiday for me, especially if I need to pay more towards it if something else goes wrong (which seems likely from various posts on the internet).

Anyway, thanks for reading, at least it's good to have a moan about it!

Something like this does sour everything. I see you have posted on the Air Travel Forum. I am pretty sure travel on ONE ticket will have one confirmation number for the whole journey and include all flights. If you have two flights with individual confirmation numbers, I suspect you are on your own. Furthermore, you would have to pick up your luggage as it would not be checked right through. YYZ is a big airport with long corridors, lots of walking. So do check on your ticket that you have an hour for picking up your luggage and 2 hours to change planes. That would be a wise amount of time to allow.

It could happen that CA changes things again. I believe that unlike major airlines, they don't pay much towards their "keep" at airports as the others do, so they get last choice (and sometimes no choice) for gate privileges. In my younger days, I have walked down stairs and out on to the tarmac to get on the plane. That's partly why you get those low fares. As well as not paying for ground crew to get your luggage checked right through. All those little things that we think are just "handled" are avoided like the plague for those low cost charters.

The good news (I know, hard to find in all this!) is that you are down for WestJet from Toronto to Halifax. They are very well thought of and they go out of their way to provide excellent customer service. And there are 7 flights a day out of YYZ for YHZ. I'm not sure what the charge would be for changing flights if you have to, but I'm sure there would be some.

I have to say, I would almost welcome another cancellation or change of flight days by CA, it might just give you the opportunity to take that refund. Do keep an eye on BA and Air Canada flights while you are holding your breath. But it is getting a bit late now for good fares in June.

Like the Giant of beanstalk fame, I say "Fie on 'em." Do what you have to do to get here in a way you can live with and then immerse and abandon yourself into your holiday. You can always eat mac and cheese for a month after.

westjet.com/guest/…service-fees.shtml

I've just found some information on the change fees that WestJet charges in the link above. First, you would be changing after 24 hours of booking, so $50. Then the airfare itself would be different, without doubt higher because you would be at YYZ and buying a fresh ticket on the day of, so you would have to pay the difference between what you paid and the cost of the ticket on that day. That would apply each way if the situation happened both going and coming.

Hi again, thank you for taking the time to reply in such detail - your thoughtful and kind words, plus your help and advice have made me feel better! (-:

You're right, just focus on the holiday as much as possible. I'll put some budget aside in case things do go wrong - and if they don't treat myself to something afterwards! And see it as a lesson learnt (read those T&C in detail) and never ever book with Canadin Affair again!!
