Santo Domingo Forum: Serie del Caribe 2012

Do the resorts in La Romana have shuttles to and from Santo Domingo airport? I'd rather not have to deal with the hassle of taking a taxi that far away since I'm likely travelling alone. Perhaps I am simply better off planning to hit a Winter League game somewhere instead.

No shuttles, Taxi is $125 one way. The winter league games are played in La Romana and Santiago as well as SD. Staying a night or two in SD makes the most sense to see the Serie del Caribe.

I go to winter league games every year in the DR and plan to go to the Series del Caribe there in 2012. If you are a new traveler to the DR the idea of staying in Santo Domingo at a hotel w/ a casino and pool is probably best. I stay in Boca Chica and drive into SD. Boca Chica has nice beaches and all-inclusive resorts but new travelers might find it too local. The all-inclusive resorts have beaches where you won't get bothered by vendors but the trip into SD would be expensive if you aren't driving and I would not recommend driving to anyone who isn't familiar w/ the DR.

I plan to go to the Series del Caribe in Santo Domingo in Feb. 2012. I need info. from anyone who knows how to get tickets. I have a friend there who has connections but he hasn't heard anything yet. I also have contacted the stadium in Santo Domingo w/ out a reply. If I hear anything I will post it here for anyone interested.

Juan Dolio beaches are a no-no in my opinion. Only Club Hemingweys is worth it, but its a private complex with no Hotel.

I find quite hight the taxi rates given here!!!

The taxi driver I recomend is really good, and her prices are excellent. She and her husband own tow taxis and they have the best service and pricing Ive ever seen in my yesra living here.

The drive from the nice resorts (La Romana to Santo Domingo) is a couple of hours. Decent hotels in the city are few and far between. If you're looking for US quality hotels, Hilton is newest and nicest, Courtyard is newer and fairly close to ballpark, Renaissance is entertaining, but pretty shop-worn. There are also some decent places in Colonial District. But again, if you're looking for a resort experience, go east.

Tickets...Hard to get in advance if you're a gringo unless you know somebody over there pretty well. And even then it's an ordeal. Games will all be sold out, but tickets will be easy to buy from locals outside...Bargain hard...There are usually guys who speak decent English who will help negotiate, for a small fee of course. The crowds are notoriously late arriving, so don't be in big hurry.

It's a great experience. They play two games each day, starting around 4, so it makes for a pretty long day of baseball. I'd advise staying in the city a couple of days instead of driving back and forth every day. It's a beating. As others have mentioned, driving is an adventure and not for the faint of heart. But I also find it part of the DR experience.

What are the dates of the 2012 Serie? I know its typically the first week of Feb. When does the schedule come out? So you cannot purchase tickets on line beforehand?
