Amsterdam layover ..
Save

Hey guys! So I am flying home from Ireland to Canada on Dec 31st with a one hour layover in Amsterdam.. However, since it will be NYE and I have friends in AMS ., I was considering seeing if I could extend my layover with the airlines so I could spend NYE there. I'm not too sure if the Airlines can do that , change it to another day for me to fly home etc on the same ticket, Does anyone know if this is a thing that the airlines can do for me? Or what to ask them? I'm flying home with KLM if thats any help.

Any tips or advice are much appreciated!

:)

Depends on the type of ticket and fare, but in general no. You would have to change the second leg of the flight which typically involves a change fee. It would be considered a multi-leg ticket instead of round-trip. Some airlines (BA, JAL, etc.) let you specify a layover when you book and that may or may-not be free.

Not only a change fee involved but you would also have to pay the difference in airfare. Since you are so close to the date of departure fare buckets will more than likely be at pretty much the highest price. Seats will be at a premium if in fact there are any to be had so be prepared to pay a large sum of money plus the huge change fee they will be asking for.

While it's a great idea, in all likelihood it will be significantly expensive. Unless you've purchased a refundable/changeable fare, you'll pay both a penalty fee plus a new ticket. The stopover cost will add to that cost. Call the carrier to check, but doubtful it will work economically.

I would suggest contacting them via Facebook or Twitter, try to phone them can take a long time if you do not have status to queue jump.

You can look at your ticket at KLM.com and check how much the change fee is. Then you need to find out if there are seats on the first and what it will cost. Good luck

"It would be considered a multi-leg ticket instead of round-trip"

Only if the onward flight was more than 24 after arrival of the first flight. If it's less than 24 hours it would still be a round trip, but as already mentioned there would be a fee to pay to change to a later flight.
