Just had drinks, cool bar, friendly atmosphere. Being from Texas was happy to see Shiner Bock on tap.
You all need to put this place in perspective. McCarthy is a fairly remote place and very, very small. Don't go there if you are expecting everything to be the same as the big cities. There are two sides to the Golden Saloon. One side has the bar and cafe; the other side the white table cloth restaurant. Same kitchen.... More
First off McCarthy's is a great little town. What you expect of off-the-beaten-path Alaska. Everything Talkeetna pretends to be but with out the tour buses and pretentious climbers. Grab a beer on the front patio and soak it all in. As far as the food goes it's basically below average pub food. I had a chicken sandwich that was dry... More
There are only a couple of places for breakfast in McCarthy, and we made the mistake of choosing this one! The place was not crowded, but the waitress was not able to handle it. It took a long time for everything. The coffee was really bad and almost cold. We were told that they did not have a couple of... More
After hiking all day this is THE place to eat. Excellent bar. Funky atmosphere. People share experiences around the table and the food us just good. Not sophisticated but fresh and warm with quite a good variety And not pricy. Also late ate times there are performances.
We ate several meals here--3 dinners and 3 breakfasts, and they packed us a lunch--all were excellent. We tried a lot of different things on the menu, and all were tasty. At breakfast each morning we would be presented the list of "we are out of.....", but that is to be expected when you are 60 miles from the nearest... More
We ate there twice plus one breakfast. The food was average, but I want to mention the breakfast. Since one of us is not a big eater, I wanted a side orde of 1 egg and a piece of toast, There are only whole breakfasts on the menu. 1 egg was not possible (they do have eggs!) and one piece... More
After a long day of hiking this was a welcome reward. The beer was cold and decently priced. The food was also affordable by Alaska standards which is amazing considering how far removed this community is. Our food was fresh and delicious. There was a mixup with our order so it did take awhile to get out meal. But the... More
The food was delicious and the staff friendly and outgoing. The portion sizes were large and the prices very reasonable.
Rustic saloon and restaurant in keeping with the general ambience of this historic little town. We ate there for breakfast and dinner during our two day stay in McCarthy since it was the only dining place still open in a town that starts shutting down in September. Maybe six items on the menu, but we were never disappointed. Nice variety... More
