Given the shrinking choices for a cold beer in Kabul, this place is about as good as it gets. It can get a little crowded with security types on a Thursday and the beer is very expensive but hey, its Afghanistan! The garden is nice and the bar staff friendly, as is the crowd generally. Almost anywhere else in the world it would be rated as an average restaurant with a tiny bar in the basement... in Afghanistan, it may be the best hangout place for someone from "almost anywhere else in the world". Coming from a combat zone, it was like stepping into the twilight zone. More

One of my favourite (shared first place in fact) hang out places in Kabul (and not because of the bar downstairs). Really good food (although as EVERYWHERE in Kabul, even here you're never completely completely out of danger of food poisoning), wonderful garden with ducks and occasional peacocks wondering around, free wi-fi as a bonus. Gandamack Lodge offers a nice atmosphere for a lively expat clientéle. The decor is nice, service is usually good (with some exceptions), and the food is fine, offering a mix of Afghan and international specialities. Prices are reasonable for Kabul standards. More
