We ranked the coffee as one of our least favourite in NZ (where the coffee is pretty exceptional), but the muffin was amazing.
We wandered out into town reading display menus and picked this place. The service wasn't flashy but it was good; polite, welcoming and helpful. We had two different lamb dishes and both were very good. The prices were commensurate with the meal in New Zealand terms. I'd recommend it to friends and go again if we end up there.
Totally overpriced, ordered lamb shank received venison which was tough, brought the additional vegies when meal nearly finished which were raw and very oily. The salmon order, what to say? "vegies" upon which smallish piece of salmon sat swam in oil and a very unapetising colour. Very limited beer choice. Flat white coffee was good. Certainly one of the worst... More
I had a burger, very good. My wife had the Thai salad, nothing to Thai about that though. Flexible when it comes to kids food (so many places have only fried stuff), but they made us fresh veggies. Cakes are not very good though.

The restaurant recommended to us on the corner looked too crowded so came down to the Plump Pigeon. Very welcoming, lovely fire going and different spaces for playing pool, watching sport on tv, eating outside or a quiet area inside by the fire. I had the best Green Chicken Curry ever and my husband loved his Seafood Risotto. We went... More
The food was lovely. It is nice sitting near the cozy fire. However the waiters weren't welcoming at all. We had just driven for 5 hours, most of which through torrential rain to get to Franz Josef so even just a slight smile would have been greatly appreciated.
We enjoyed the warm soup and the good food. The service was excellent but a bit slow. The place has a relaxed and warm atmosphere.
We only went there for desert after having dinner somewhere else, however the pavlova was very nice and the staff we very attentive. They also offered free wifi for customers which came in handy, and the place was well presented inside with a big old open fire
