Description: Amma, the name means "Mother", is an intimate restaurant and has the same soothing qualities. Opened in 2002 by Anju Sharma, is a gem tucked away on the upper east side of Manhattan, the stylish restaurant evokes images of spices, with its ochre colored walls and sensuous red-orange suede wrap-around banquettes. Art deco chandeliers and pristine linens complete the ambience. In a short period of time, Amma has received numerous accolades from the press. Amma was rated "Two Stars" by Mr. William Grimes of NY Times. At Amma, the wine list is updated on a weekly basis and is carefully chosen from 30 countries from around the world. Amma, shows its guest a different India, so old that it is fresh.

I always try Indian wherever I travel and Amma had excellent reviews on Yelp NY as well as other food sites. The restaurant was easy to find. I was seated quickly and the waiter was friendly. The food was served quickly and was really good. Excellent Butter Chicken, naans, kulfi. Good value meal. More

Recently had a very nice lunch at Amma. The restaurant is rather small but comfortable. Presentation was good. Not too pricey for lunch More

Even including the discount exchange rate (they do use the USD in NYC but you loose about 35% when you use when you cross into the city), this place is expensive. The bill for two (excluding wine and tip) was $115. There is a lot of formal presentation of food, but I have to say that the food was nothing special.Presentation... More

A small but intimate Indian restaurant located in a quiet street. Atmosphere nothing special - but the food great with superb presentation. More

I ordered the cauliflower manchurian and really liked it. I have had it at Chinese mirch too but definitely prefer the one at Amma's. More

saw the reviews, and went here with my wife. The waiter recommended the taster menu, and it was very very good. More

I recently visited NYC for the first time and spent several enjoyable days sampling food from as many places and cuisines as I could. We ate in places fancy and places that weren't so much. All the meals I had were very good, but the dinner at Amma after trekking around the Met all day was the very best meal... More

Indian spices are prevalent in every dish. Parents loved the flavors and heat, teens not so excited. Less spicy is butter chicken FYI Cozy atmosphere was nice respite from busy streets! More

Every single dish was perfect, service was pleasant, presentation was very agreeable, really 100% out of 100%. The restaurant is small, and well attended, it's best to go early because space is at a premium. I very highly recommend Amma. More
