Description: According to Zagat, Suckers for sake swoon over the "hidden jewel" near Grand Central offering a "mind boggling" selection of rice wine "categorized by region", as well as an "understated, quiet" setting reminiscent of a "private club"; those in the know say it's "secret location" (in the basement of an office building) make it better.

I live in Rome and NY , mostly in Rome. The one thing which is missing in Rome on the restaurant scene is Japanese or ethnic food. So when I am in New York I don't resist long before going to one of my two favorite Japanese restaurants, Sakagura and Sushi Yasuda, both on 43rd street between 2nd and 3rd... More

I found this place while doing a yelp search for good sushi in the midtown area. Please not that the building will look like an office building but go in. Do not enter the Japanese restaurant NEXT to the building. Yes, it s misleading but keep walking in and turn to the left next to the guard desk. You are... More

Excellent Japanese food, small plates, quality ingredients and very fresh fish, every flavor comes through in each dish. Expensive but worth it for a splurge meal. Decor is interesting, located in the basement down a set of grubby stairs. Good service. More

If you are looking for a great variety of the freshest authentic Japanese food and a HUGE sake menu ... look no further. A little tricky to find, it's tucked away in the sub-basement of an office building, but you're instantly transported to Tokyo. Wonderful service, very reasonable cost, and we loved the "tapas" style menu; we ordered 6 different... More

Great food but be extremely cautious about the wine (they don't serve wine but call and ask if you want to bring your own wine). Love the food but the staff was contradictory about the wine policy. We called before about the cork fee (as they don't serve wine) and was told 20 dollars per bottle. When we got to... More

If you want sushi, this is not the place. Delicious small (Tapas style) Japanese dishes. Restaurant located in the basement of an office building, which is very Japanese style. Bathrooms are a conversation- oscillating, pulsating, or rinse cycle. Large Sake selection. More

We were looking for a very good sushi in New York City and we trusted the online reviews taking us to this "underground" and "typical" restaurant. The atmosphere (especially if you are used to Japs in Europe) is uniquely fantastic.. A small and cozy Japanese corner in the heart of NYC..offering a tantalizing selection of sake and extraordinary courses. Definitely... More

Sakagura is very very Japanese, and very, very good. I've spent a lot of time in Japan, and have eaten at restaurants like this in Tokyo and Osaka. Sakagura would more than hold it's own in that country. The combination of exquisite food, a very well-chosen sake list and a lovely, comfortable setting is worth every penny of the considerable... Looking for a very good Japanese restaurant in Mid-town? This is the place to go! The sake selection is extensive and the food is great. Went there with four others plus a little one and the staff was very accommodating (no high chairs, but the booster seat was fine). The buka no kakuni was tender and flavorful, the assorted sashimi... More
