Description: Black Trumpet is a two-story bistro and wine bar in the heart of Portsmouth’s historic old port. Both floors offer views of the Piscataqua River and the oft-photographed tugboats that still escort enormous tankers into the harbor. Our first floor dining room offers a cozy, romantic setting with warm, unassuming service. The upstairs wine bar is a more intimate, convivial space. The menu changes every six weeks to capitalize on the freshest seasonal ingredients. The wine list features a variety of unheralded gems that pair well with the bold flavors of Chef Mallett’s cuisine. Black Trumpet’s cuisine reflects the chef-owner’s culinary curiosity, drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean as well as the Americas. A typical Black Trumpet menu may include influences from Spain, North Africa, Turkey and the Mexican heartland. Reservations are accepted in our dining room, the upstairs wine bar is first-come-first-served.

My husband and I ate here 2 years ago and had an excellent meal and really enjoyed the atmosphere. So, 2 years later we decided to eat here again. We were not disappointed! We ate upstairs (not in the regular restaurant area) again and it was just perfect. We both thoroughly enjoyed the meal. My husband had the arancini and... More

In addition to their regular offerings, the Malletts offer wine dinners that may be based on a region or a single vintner but that are always interesting. The people who attend are a fun mix of professionals from the beverage and food realms, plus locals who like wine and those who just trust Chef Evan and his associates to do... More

My boyfriend and I spent a weekend in Portsmouth last January. We decided on the Black Trumpet because of the eclectic menu and romantic atmosphere. I loved every aspect of it as soon as I walked through the door. It is very dimly lit with candles everywhere. So romantic but still a place I would love to take my girlfriends... More

First this restaurant could have been plucked out so any number of Northern European cities. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and worked well for our business dinner (place was less then 20% full so no noise issuers at all). Our waitress was great she know the menu, how to do scribe it and sell the food diving into flavors,... More

We had a fantastic meal last night for our 24th wedding anniversary. We arrived a bit early and we were seated in the window seat with a view of the river. Already, it's starting out nicely. The wait staff couldn't be friendlier! and knowledgeable of their ever changing menu (which I learned when we were there) Seriously gourmet choices. AND,... More

We had dinner on a Tuesday night, expecting a "Tuesday night" experience. It was our wedding anniversary and chose this restaurant because of their commitment to sustainability, which was perfect to reflect what an anniversary should be! What we found to be most sustainable was our waitress, Rebecca! We savored every course at our leisure and were the last table... More

We arrived without a reservation on a rainy, cold night at about 8:00pm. The environment is warm and inviting - very cozy and chic but with a relaxed feel. The waitstaff was wonderful and the food was simply outstanding. It was restaurant week in Portsmouth, so we got to try more than we might have on our own. I had... More

The atmosphere is great and intimate, the food is exquisitely prepared and absolutely excellent. I had a fantastic cream of truffle soup and incredible scallops. This is one of the best meals I've had in Portsmouth.
