Description: The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Carlyn Berghoff. At today’s Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it’s still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff’s wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's “tradition with a twist!” Private Dining - Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group provides a truly unique event experience within the setting of the historic Berghoff building. This German restaurant has been a Chicago landmark owned by the same family. They have a full menu of traditional German food as well as sandwiches and soups and salads. The location is only a few blocks from the Art Institute of Chicago, shopping and the park. We ordered one sandwich and a salad and asked to split the two... More

Eating here is a nostalgic trip back in time as the facilities do not appear to have been updated in decades, and that is not a bad thing. The food is basic good old fashioned German fare, somewhat modernized here and there (applewood bacon wrapped shrimp?). We could not decide what to get so we ordered a bunch of the... More

Definitely worth a visit, interesting place. Good beer selection, friendly service (a little slow, but it was busy). Appetisers were really tasty, main courses were good (not exceptional).

This superb downtown German restaurant has been around a long time. A long time favorite, It just says CHICAGO to me. I have never seen an inefficient waiter. The beer is always good there; The sauerbraten and the apple strudel are always the same: perfect!

Went to the Berghoff the first night as part of a conference group of over 100 people. The service for such a large group was excellent. Had the crab and shrimp cake appetizer which was really excellent. Had two choices of either the white fish or chicken entrees. My wife and I had one of each and thought they were... More

Very good German style food with house brand beer that is spot on for Munich style beers. I had the Jaegerschnitzel and was not disappointed - nice mushroom cream sauce and the housemade spaetzle were excellent. My spouse had the Wienerschnitzel, and it was superb. The preparation and breading was sasoned perfectly and made for one of the best Wienerschnitzel... More

While in town for business, I decided to try Berghoff's for dinner. I was sorely disappointed. The staff was polite but hardly welcoming. The bread triangles were stale and very hard around the edges. The entree (an unremarkable fish and spinach dish) was lukewarm. After leaving it half eaten, the server came to take my plate and didn't ask of... More

We arrived and were seated immediately even though we were quite early coming from the theatre. Service was great - water and bread were brought immediately to our table and the waiter showed up quickly after to ask if we had any questions or needed recommendations. I ordered the pork shank, which was amazing. My father ordered the weiner schnitzel... More

I am not familiar with many German dishes and I was not sure what to order when I arrived at the Berghoff. After changing my mind several times, I decided on the German Gnocci. It was recommended by our waiter and he knew what he was talking about! It was so tasty with the mixture of Cajun chicken, spinach and... More
