The building is great - old and rambling and staff seem to appear at every corner. It's like Kandy's answer to Fawlty Towers, including a 'Manuel' in the restaurant, we mostly found the experience great fun BUT we were attacked by bed bugs. Our room had three, single, hospital-type beds in, two with mosquito nets. Mossies always seem to find... More

Beware of ordering the egg curry - the egg part is a solitary peeled hard-boiled egg! As it comes with a huge plate of rice, dal, a veg curry, poppadoms, coconut sambal etc it's not as bad as it sounds, but in general it was very cheap so not amazing quality food. I still enjoyed the experience though - it... More

I went to the Olde Empire to enquire about rooms for possible future visits. The older man at reception was extremely unfriendly like I was disturbing him from his work to tell me the info. The other staff also looked similarly unfriendly so I left. The building itself looks lovely but is in a very air-polluted part of town and... More

We ate here after a circuit of the lake. We had the rice and curry set lunch which was superb. A large variety of tasty dishes which kept coming until we were done. Highly recommended! More

Great old colonial guest house. The staff are friendly and the food cheap and eadible. No hot water. No bar but you can get fcarry out from bootle shop a few street away which is by far the best way to drink in Kandy. Downside you will be awakened at 5am by the faithful being called to prayer. Good budget rates... More

We ate at this old hotel based on a recommendation in the Lonely Planet. Don't bother. The rice smelt really bad. We found out later they did not wash the rice properly. The curries were just ok, we tasted better. More

The restaurant was full, we weren't hungry... Sadly, as the food looked great. We just had a cup of coffee, all cheap, but very cheerful! Lovely atmosphere with the staff. They have a few basis rooms upstairs with shared bathrooms, all very real.... And nostalgic. Hope it doesn't change! More
