Description: South Texas Ice House, "Texas Cuisine" Products from the Texas Gulf to the Texas Hill Country. "The huge snake logo on the outside of an otherwise nondescript building -- created by Bob "Daddy-O" Wade, best known for the oversize boots that front San Antonio's North Star Mall -- is your first hint that this place might be a bit, well, different. Inside, cowboy kitsch, 1950s diner decor, and Mexican folk art mingle, as do workers from the nearby county offices, local movers and shakers, and anyone else looking for terrific food that, like the decor, defies easy categorization. Call it South Texas gourmet. You can really taste the chipotle chilies in the tartar sauce that comes with some of the best crispy oysters this side of the Mason-Dixon Line, and the Gulf fish tacos are gussied up with chili lime aioli and Tabasco jalapeno onions. You get the idea -- lots of spicy dishes."

The place looks promising with its kitschy western motifs. The food, though, was bland. Others have commented on the specials sheet that does not include prices on it, which doesn't lend itself to ordering from it. The location is a bit out of the way (just a bit), and in an area undergoing construction, so it wasn't that nice. Overall... More

Setting is lovely, kitschy and fun and full of paraphernalia. Nice outdoor seating area for warm evenings. Strong tasty drinks. But the red light should go on when you see that their "specials" sheet comes to your table WITHOUT PRICES. DH and I are quite experienced travelers, but were tuckered out that evening. I ordered from the standard menu, a... More

We dressed up...bad idea! Dumpy dive-looks like a nasty Mexican restaurant inside. Very poor service. WAY too proud of everything: drinks, food, etc! Can get so much more for your money at Flemings or McCormick and schmick, even mirabelles. They make Mesa ranch look like the four seasons! NEVER AGAIN! Blech! More

Made late Friday night dinner plans with out of town family. The 616 staff was able to move things around and fit us in between reservation. We all ordered the various specials after the waiter’s description. Everyone was happy with their choices but not ecstatic. The surprise came with the check when the specials were all $40+. Surprisingly higher than... More

From the rattlesnake hide and long horn wall mounts to the large steaks and welcoming staff this is where to go to experience Austin Texas dining. Travelling by myself on business I stumbled on this establishment, sat at the 8 person bar and had dinner with locals sitting on both sides of me. On a thursday night the place was... More

We called last minute, but they were very helpful and got us in on a busy night. Our waiter was wonderful, well-informed and helpful. The place is fun and interesting, very Austin. We loved the menu selections, so hard to choose! We loved all the vegetable appetizers and the beef selections were great! More

My wife and I stumbled across this Austin gem when we got turned away from another, much less hospitable (and well known) restaurant....and I'm glad we did! This place was fabulous! GREAT food, entertaining atmosphere, and a unique Austin charm. We sat at the bar not just because the place was packed (not hard to do - it's small) and... More

Small restaurant but different, good home style cuisine and great atmosphere. It is usually pretty busy so you may have to wait since it a pretty small restaurant but definitely has the local Austin vibe and great food. More

...although if you visit for a drink, the fried asparagus is terrific. Great service, unfortunate food. Always seems to have a wait despite several visably open tables. Inconsistant. More

It doesn't look like much more than a local dive from the outside, but when you walk in during the weekday lunch hour, you can tell that something's gotta be special about this place. The service was friendly and energetic, and the food came out quickly. My "Daddy-O" special (grilled salmon with a chipotle sauce on a bun) was fantastic,... More
