The food quality is slightly better than what one would expect from a frozen dinner. It's not that cheap either. Rather go somewhere else.
We were treated to a wonderful experience as the host greeted us with a smile and requested where we wanted to be seated. Next to the fireplace with a small fire trickling provided a cozy feeling. Our fare was prepared just as we requested with outstanding results as the steaks melted in our mouths. The diverse quantities of beer made... More
I was admittedly a little apprehensive after reading a couple bad reviews, but decided to give it a go since this place holds a certain nostalgia for me. 12 years ago I was deployed here with the Coast Guard and this was the first place I had ever had a burger served with blue cheese! The restaurant is located right... More
After dinning @ John Lau's for OVER 2 decades its difficult & heartbreaking to see this restaurant in such a sad state of affairs. My kids grew up frequenting this saloon...I hope they get ahold of the reins so we can once again enjoy dinning at one of our favorite places. Last year it was not bad, last month was... More
We were a party of six. Five of the us ordered the endless fried cod. One order shrimp scampi. The cod quality was good. However, the beer batter was very thick. The shrimp scampi was overcooked. The pasta that came with the shrimp dinner had no taste.
Great atmosphere, history, menu, and beer/bar scene -- comparable to high end historical bar in Boston, but priced for the area... Great decor, service - highly recommended... Also historically significant for the area...
My wife and I had our 40th wedding anniversary diner at John A. Lau and were very disappointed with the food; it was very average at a higher than average price. Our entrees were served to soon; we had barely taken a few bites of our salads when the entrée arrived. My wife's coconut shrimp were over-cooked (nearly burned) and... More
The Lake Perch was prepared on a cedar plank, meal was more than a person could eat. The atmosphere is fun, décor entertaining, be sure to check out the beer garden patio! Excellent service as well!
This place has some of the best food available in Alpena! The building has a great atmosphere as well. I've eaten here many times and never had a bad experience. I often vacation in Alpena and I always make it a point to eat at least once at the John Lau Saloon on every trip.
