This place has been around for years. That said, it has maintained the kind of service and reputation rarely seen outside the capital. Paymasters is a restaurant steeped in history and it offers fantastic meals that won't hurt the wallet. Request a table on the upstairs verandah (there's wonderful views of the foreshore and working harbour). More

Had an excellent meal as a party of 5. Seated front and centre downstairs. Matre d' provided useful comprehensive advice re the menu. A nicely "different" menu. Waitpersons were excellent - just the right timing and level of involvement. They even landed the right plates in front of the right people. Food was excellent - good portions, timing, presentations -... More

I believe it is now back in previous management who were fanastic. Very good food and the dining experience is a little unique. Have been a regualr visitor, but did prefer when it was BYO and we could bring along much finer wines to accompany the food. More

We dined here as a group of 4. We were seated upstairs, however were inside, not on the balcony. The room upstairs is quiet, warm and inviting. Service from all the staff was very friendly and relaxed, infact it was perhaps a bit too familiar at times. Menu offered a nice range of meals including a couple of interesting vegetarian... More

What a fantastic Sunday lunch we had. We were met by Randolph ( the owner) with one of the warmest greetings you will get it is like him inviting you into his house to have lunch. We started with the bruschetta very nice. Entrees came out quite promptly and my husband and I both had the red curry duck omellette... More

Went here with a group of 5. The garlic prawns and baked Camembert for entrees are great. Everyone enjoyed their mains and the cheese plate and a nice port are a great way to finish the evening off. More

Paymasters has a long reputation in Newcastle for being one of the finer dining locations in the city and it was based on this that we decided to give it a try. After our experience, I think the reputation is most likely out of date. Views are nothing spectacular as they are set quite a bit back from the water... More
