The place is good and is one of the few decent cafes at the Willis end of Lambton Quay, but it does get VERY busy during lunch time and then it can be a bit of a struggle to find a spot to sit in. The food is usually good and most of it is made on premises. The lunch... More

Great spot for a business meeting. A little dark down stairs and service slower than would have expected. Food selection limited and not that exciting looking. The sparrows added a nice homely/patio type feel.

Had the big cooked breakfast which was expensive at $20 but very nice. My wife had muesli and a cup of tea, with an OJ for me it came to $40 which is pricy. Nice ambience, constant flow of customers for dine in and takeaway coffee. Enjoyed and probably will return

Crisp hashbrowns and bacon, soft yolk eggs and silky hollandaise. And simply the normal excellent coffee. Nice team of young baristas with welcoming smiles.

This was mostly potato could not find anyother veges except a bit of sundried tomato decorating the top. There was no tast to this I did not bother to have more than a mouthful. The location of this cafe is useful to meet people in town, the building great example of old New Zealand. Food is above average, staff are average - nothing stands out as brilliant or terrible, they serve you and that's all.

We often eat here for lunch when in the city as Smiths is well located. Very good coffee and good food. Although busy we usually get a table without difficulty. Staff friendly and service efficient. Haven't tried a cup cake from the corner counter!!

Smith the Grocer, in a heritage building, offers snacks and light meals, and also packaged foods. It looks attractive, there are newspapers to read, and it's a comfortable place to meet or to have five minutes to yourself. It's useful for coffee and tea, but not especially good. The coffee is reasonably good, but the date scones were very ordinary... More

This place was recommended to me by a friend, and I called in recently on a visit to Wellington. The food was great, staff were busy but friendly. There's a really good selection of food and drinks, would cater for a range of tastes. The building is marvelous, lots of character, worth coming here for this alone!

We have been to Smith the Grocer several times now and the first visit was definitely the best visit. I have felt that subsequent visits have been less than satisfactory althought the concept and surroundings are fantastic the front of house staff lack any sort of pizazz and last visit felt like we were a chore to serve. Probably won't... More
