Loved that at 11.30pm at night, we found a lovely outside table and enjoyed freshly cooked Japanese food. Loved seeing the chef's at work and the shop manager was very helpful, polite and willing to please. Will be back there again soon....

We dined at Kanpai after an afternoon's shopping on Chapel Street. The service was very slow and although chopsticks were on other tables we waited for 5 minutes before realising that she was not coming back. In the end we took them from the table next to us. This appears to be a japanese restaurant run by vietnamese and lacks...

Food average, service worse (they forgot half the order and then at the end of the meal I was obliged to walk inside - and wait again - to pay the bill). Plus, smokers on the outside tables ruined whatever was remaining of the occasion. We won't be returning.
The Japanese food and service was pretty good. It has a nice casual atmosphere in a great location on Chapel Street. I would go there again.
Food is awesome..Teppanyaki is amazing and the best gyoza iv had!!! Service is so so.. But I go for the great taste! It's in south Yarra so busy on Saturday and Sunday night.. Best to make a booking! Relaxed atmostphere! Great place for a small group dinner! Not a place to take small kids too tho :) I've recommended this...

This is some of the best Japanese I have had in Melbourne. Obviously it doesn't compare to a high class Japanese restaurant like Nobu, but it's very nice for a casual family dinner. Your in for great food and service! I personally recommend the Chicken Yakitori and the Garlic Prawns. All the sashimi is exceptional.
i admit it, i have visited Kanpai many times before, and i love the food, even though it is quite pricey. But i have never been fond of the service, the owner and manager themselves are rude and impolite.
To be perfectly honest, the price that you'd pay for at Kan Pai does not suffice the service!! I dont mind...

After a tram ride from the CBD with minimal visibility, we arrived at the intersection of Toorak Road and Chapel Streets in South Yarra. I found this Japanese restaurant, run by Chinese...
