At its best, izakaya cuisine can be much better than this. The grazing style of eating is increasingly popular, but it needs quality food to enhance the anticipation factor of awaiting the next course. The food here is not bad - it is just not that good either. As such, the value for money could be better.

You don't go to Izakaya Chuji for a fancy night out or for cutting-edge Japanese cuisine. But if you want a range of delicious snack-style dishes that go well with beer, this is your place. All of the yakitori options are great (I recommend giving the beef tongue a go) and the oysters are excellent. Love the 600ml cans of... More

As an overall, food is average and expensive (i.e. not worth the value). The avocado roll costs about $8 or $9 for 6 small pieces (see pic), but one thing good is that it's hot and I can see that it was just rolled. The ramen broth is alright but nothing close to yummy. I think this place is more... More

We've been going to Chuji for a few years for casual dinners and although I enjoy the food there, the state of the booths in the restaurant have been getting shabbier and shabbier to the point where you almost don't want to sit down. Upstairs where you can get BBQ, the furniture is better but you will smell of BBQ... More

Great selection of food. We had sashimi, okonomiyaki, Japanese Curry, Tempura, inari and lots of drinks! Fantastic tempura and curry! Sashimi was OK... Drinks were fantastic! Anywhere with Umeshu is a WIN in my book. Plus my boyfriend LOVED the selection of Japanese Beers!

The food is not as good as it used to be.. but their green tea ice cream is still the best in Melbourne.
