We had lunch here, the toasted sandwiches were fine - but the service really lets this place down. We had coffees whilst waiting for a third person to join us and our menus were taken off the table by staff without asking us if we wanted to order anything else. After waiting for a while and having no one come... More

As we arrived at the Salamanca Market, it started to pour with rain so we took shelter (and had breakfast) at Retro Cafe. Nice (but not amazing) food, and ok coffee. Less nice were the flies that were doing laps of our table - probably trying to escape the rain too! More

Perfect little breakfast cafe. It reminded me of Pandaemonium Cafe in Paddington, Brisbane with all the vintage/retro fit-out, the wall covered in posters. It's small but cosy. Enjoyed the eggs benedict. Normal city breakfast prices. Husband and I didn't get away for much under $50. More

We arrived in Hobart on the coldest March day for 15 years - 11 degrees and raining (we left Sydney with 25 degrees). So even though we were somewhat prepared, it was a bit of a shock. We dropped in Retro on Salamanca St for a late lunch (and it was warm inside!). We stayed because it's a friendly cafe... More

Return again to this institution. Killer mushrooms on toast and pretty good coffee. Ambience very cool. More

The cafe had several variations on the traditional bruschetta on the menu the day I visited and the one I ordered was delicious. Service was prompt. More

Pricey (like all of Tasmania) but interesting stuff on the menu. Watch out though - they don't take credit cards. More

If you sit long enough out in the street at Retro, you're bound to see at least one famous person and a lot of the people you haven't caught up with for a while. The coffee is no longer the best in Salamanca (for that you need to go to Dr Coffee, round the corner in the arcade), but the... More

My partner ordered the eggs benedict bagel which they were looking forward to after a very disappointing eggs benny elsewhere. When it came out the waitress warned us that the plate was very hot...and she wasn't wrong! For reasons best known to Retro they'd taken the entire dish and stuck it under the grill. For long enough that the plate... More
