Description: DVijff Vlieghen it means The Five Flies restaurant in medieval Amsterdam is a landmark, full to bursting with everyone from business diners to tourist busloads to couples who love it. The nine dining rooms ramble over five classic 17th century townhouses, each dining room a different expression of the Dutch Golden Age. The Rembrandt Room features etchings, the Knights Hall a collection of armour and so forth. Groups can book different rooms or hire the whole amazing place to seat up to 300. The founder, one Nicolaas Kroese, started it all in 1939. He had gigantic charisma that attracted attention from everywhere. Plaques on the chairs commemorate past guests: Walt Disney, Gianni Versace, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis. Chef Jeroen Groot creates exciting New Dutch cuisine dishes, using mainly organic veg and other respectful sourcing, presenting a la carte, seasonal, vegetarian five-course, and tasting menus. Dishes might include starter of brandade of stewed eel with grilled courgette and fried langoustine, main of casserole of spring chicken served in a sauce of Hoeve Nekum wine and chervil and dessert of mocha tartlet with crispy meringue and fennel chips. Finish with a typical jenever. Theres no more famous restaurant on the Spui. Please note this restaurant is completely non-smoking.

We tend to go there every time we are in the city. It is really amazing that they can keep their shape over the years. Well done, D'Vijff!!!! More

Just returned from an absolutely first-rate meal at the 5 Flies. Service couldn't have been better and every taste was perfect. We asked for recommendations on e everything since nothing on the menu was familiar. C'mon folks, how many historic restaurants can you dine in where there are 4 original Rembrandt etchings on the wall? Local diners also agree. You... More

My husband insisted on bringing us to the 5Flys for dinner. I was not enthused, as I had never experienced it before. , However it was wonderful. The atmosphere and the food were excellent. Our service was very good, not spectacular. Perhaps a bit overpriced compared to some other restaurants that I enjoyed even more. My husband would disagree...and give... More

We asked our concierge where to find dutch food - he said there wasn't a lot around but suggested Five Flies. Service was fine but a little slow but food was not great. Had the 35 euro chefs tasting - 3 courses. Appetizers were bad, entree ok and so was dessert. Lots of juniper and carraway which we did not... More

We got a very friendly last minute reservation for a saturday night and were excited to try the recommended haute dutch cuisine. We were seated in an very uninviting dining area (might be due to the last minute reservation, though it didn't seem overwhelmingly busy) though with certain traditional dutch features. We were slightly surprised by the menu that didn't... More

What a shame our dining experience in this beautiful, atmospheric restaurant with delicious food was ruined by a complete lack of attention by our waitress! On arrival we were shown to our table by an attentive head waiter. We waited, and waited, and waited even more until we eventually managed to catch the eye of a passing waitress to ask... More

I had booked this restaurant to celebrate the tenth anniversary of our engagement in Amsterdam. Based on reviews from other TripAdvisor users I thought it would be a bit touristy and on the day I wasn't sure if I had made the right choice. But when we arrived it turned out to be nothing like what I had imagined. Yes... More

Service and food is excellent in this restaurant which is in a tiny street and set in picturesque "chamber" type wood pannelled rooms which make up the restaurant. More

I tried this small restaurant during a 3 day stay in Amsterdam. It is located in a 1600 typical house of Amsterdam downtown, with wood furniture, bona fide Rembrandt etchings, delft blue decorations, all in vertical, with stairs to climb, but you can find a very nice and warm atmosphere. The restaurant is good for business meetings or romantic stays.... More
