A perennial disappointment. The food is good, very good. Fresh ingredients, imaginatively put together. I have eaten here several times and keep going back, simply because it is so convenient for my kids after picking them up from school nearby. But I think I'm now finally going to give up. I am forever astounded by the stupidity of the service.... More

Beautiful oasis in the heart of the city. The Gateway restaurant is in a stunning building with excellent staff and good food. It is also an exhibition centre and shop

Had a winderful salmon tortilla sandwich for lunch, the views are pretty amazing, and staff friendly! Highly recommend

Setting with a view of the Botanic Gardens is superb and the Carvery is good value at £15. Carvery meal was served hot apart from the Yorkshire puddings which were uncovered and soon went cold. Overall a very good lunch.

I thoroughly reccomend a visit to the gardens for anyone coming to Edinburgh however I must warn others about the service (or lack of) in the new 'John Hope Gateway' restaurant. The staff are very rude and look down their noses at (1) those with small children and (2) lone customers. After a lovely spring morning walk around the gardens... More

The restaurant is beautiful and modern with excellent staff. Most of the food is good, but the roast vegetable platter to share is really mean : a spoonful of tired rocket surrounded by varied roast vegetables (mostly out of jars I suspect) - I had one to myself with a bowl of soup for lunch, and I was still hungry.
