Description: Open since 1985, this delightful, unpretentious restaurant in Forest Hill, London, is renowned for its stunning and innovative modern Indian cuisine. Babur's stylish, earthy interior features exposed brick walls, natural wooden furniture and beautiful handmade Bengali artworks. The intimate atmosphere and sensational staff have made Babur a favourite dining destination with Forest Hill locals, and the food is worth making a trip across town for. We highly recommend the spicy sardine fish cake stuffed with caramelised figs; sandalwood ostrich infused with fenugreek; and black cod in spices and mustard oil with mustard mash. The wine list, designed by Peter McCombie, is also superb and features 16 wines by the glass, and 34 bottles for under 20.

We had a takeaway while staying with our family, so can't comment on the restaurant itself (another time, we hope). Of the starters, the strikingly spiced orissa lamb tikka, the quail and the Punjabi paneer sandwich were especially good. Mains - chicken lababdar excellent, but the winners were the delectably subtle mustard rabbit and the shoulder of lamb marinated for... More

I joined a birthday celebration here in a party of seven. The table wasn't ready when we arrived but only had to wait for a few minutes. The staff were friendly and the good service lasted all night. However the food was average which was slightly disappointing. I had the steamed pollock dumplings to start and the lamb shank for... More

I booked a table for my partner's birthday at 7.30pm on a Tuesday and when we arrived (early), we were the first people there- the atmosphere was very quiet but Tuesdays are always like that I find. We were looked after from the moment we got there, receiving complimentary vegetable fritters before our starters and some lovely popadoms with unusual... More

We were on holiday to London with the family parents children 23 & 21 & 15. We stayed at a nearby apartment. Ordered a meal and it was super. Also one of the party has dietary requirements and this was not an issue. Its great to go on holidays and get a really good take away.

Have you ever had a truly delectable Indian meal without paying over the odds for amazing dishes, or being in a 'named' establishment in central London or having your curry dripping with oils? Well, we, like many others have found South London's best kept secret.. BABUR.. in Forest Hill SE23.. i was lucky enough to be taken for my birthday... More

In a much lesser known part of London, you will find this restaurant. Easy to pass by, but well worth a visit. Highlights, good service, interesting menu, vegetarians catered for and not the usual approach to indian food. So, for example, they serve Masala Dosa and Thalis. Not the cheapest estabishment but then you are paying for quality.

Perfect. Beautiful indian fusion dishes served in an elegant yet unpretentious environment. Had the quail to start it was small but exquisite having been marinaded n tamarind spices, then had a main that was equally wonderful, portions sufficient for people who don't equate size with quality and a satisfied feeling of fullness - the cocktails were good too ! The... More

We have been meaning to visit Babur for a while as we live nearby and when a deal came online we had to go! The food was not what you would usually expect from an Indian in London with meats such as venison, rabbit, ostrich! Presentation was fantastic and the staff helpful and friendly. We can't wait to go back.... More

Booked at table via Table7, only to arrive at the restaurant on the night and being refused as apparently they have the right to reject your booking without giving you any reason. Having travelled all the way from Reading on the day, we were so looking forward to it ! The manager was rude and didn't apologise, nor did he... More

When you look at the menu and see duck, venison, quail, buffalo, ostrich, goat, rabbit, and a menu which roams around India having seasons of regional specials ,you realise you are not in a run of the mill curry house.Even the pickles for your poppadoms are a delight in their difference from the norm. This restaurant has been here 26 years and is still going strong.They...
