It was the first hot day since March and the cool surroundings of the National Cafe were surprisingly pleasant. My elderly father likes his puddings so I suggested a starter instead of a main as neither thought we could squeeze in 3 courses for lunch. I hadn't seen kedgeree on a menu for a while so I went for the... More

Visited for a late lunch and had the club sandwich. It was very good, yet not spectacular. One would expect something better from the National Gallery, but it was ok. What is amazing and will keep me coming back is the sticky toffee pudding a MUST in London

We thought that almost all British cafés had moved on from the way things are done here. With so much choice nearby, it's a wonder that anybody ever goes here more than once (if they do), despite the convenience of a sit down after some serious hard work doing art-gallery visiting. Looking for a mid-afternoon cup of tea and a... More

My second visit here and again felt they could do wth more staff to ensure tables are cleaned and tidied a bit faster, the amount of dirty trays and rubbish gave a poor impression which is a shame because the food is pretty good. Sandwiches and cake are fresh and good quality.

The National Cafe is a big space with a few different styles of seating and space fed from a quick and efficient counter and lots of cakes and all the test. We found the high windowed, glossy black panelled and quietism room just on the corner and it was a perfect sanctuary from the bustle outside. No images or reproductions... More

We went here for an evening meal in March 2012. It was after the theatre and the menu they happily promote of fixed price are for groups only. There were only 2 tables of people when we arrived and we had booked but still they asked if we were in the right place and then as I pointed to the... More

Busy, but there were still plenty of seats around. We visited on St Valentine's Day,and were happy to see that care had been taken to celebrate the occasion, even though I was only there with my sister! As we went in to a large room looking like a Parisian bistro there was a black, shiney grand piano, a beautiful display of flowers on... More

I've been to the National cafe' three times now and I think I've given this business enough chances to show how good it can do. It's in an ideal location if you want to have a break after an exhibition. The decor is impressive and it's obvious that this is not your average cafe'. However the coffees, chips, cakes are... More

Had a fantastic cooked breakfast/brunch here with my wife. The quality of the food and cooking was first class. The coffee (with free refills) was strong and good quality (how I like it). Only small criticism was slow service

Setting and service were fine but the food was a disappointment. I'd expected higher quality (and quantity) at those prices. My kedgeree starter was good. Just as well as my salad 'main course' seemed to consist of very little except leaves - lucky I wasn't that hungry. My wife's 'minestrone' was not one many would recognise as such - a... More
