Description: Gilpin Lodge is a luxurious hotel and restaurant with a friendly, family-run atmosphere, located in the Lake District just 2 miles from Lake Windemere. Set in 20 acres of private gardens, moors and woodlands, Gilpin has been run as a hotel by the Cunliffe family since 1987 and has won countless awards over the years for its exquisite British cuisine and 300+ wine list. The four intimate dining rooms and Chapagne Bar are decadent yet down-to-earth, and the bar, gardens and lounges are pefect for an informal lunch. Signature dishes include fresh native oysters set in their own jelly; loin of Grizedale venison with baby Savoy cabbage, parsnips, chestnuts and a cinnamon sauce; and hot prune and Armagnac souffl with ice cream.

We have regularly, but infrequently, used this for entertaining friends for relaxed good dining. I have taken both family and other couples there and have no hesitation in recommending it for more expensive dining out. The food has been invariably excellent, the wines pricey, but if a large selection is carried, as here, one cannot expect cheaper prices. So if... More

Afternoon tea with friends in a lovely setting but poor food and dire service. Boring sandwiches, stale scones, nasty chocolate macaroon, an indescribable egg white square and very little of everything. Once initially served we were abandoned and had to knock on the kitchen door for more hot water and clean plates. We were a pre-booked party of seven so... More

We have visited Gilpin for lunch on a few occasions now and have thoroughly enjoyed each visit. The food is always delicious, beautifully presented and portioned sensibly to enjoy three courses which is great value at £30.There's a limited choice at lunch time although it is possible to mix and match between the restaurant menu and the light lunch selection.... My husband and I visited Gilpin Lodge on Saturday 13th April for dinner with our good friends to celebrate their birthdays. We had dined there previously and our second visit was just as wonderful. From the moment we arrived the service was impeccable and we were made to feel special. In the lounge area we were served per dinner drinks... More

My partner and I went for dinner to celebrate our respective birthdays and had a memorable meal. Each of the many courses was exquisite and inventive in both content and presentation, the house wines were excellent and all the staff were friendly and attentive. The ambience of the whole place was quiet, comfortable and relaxing (no background music, thank goodness) but we found the dining... We had a fabulous evening meal that seemed to never end! 2 different amuse bouche in the bar with champagne, at the table a twist on fish & "crinkle" chips with mushy peas prior to our starters. The starters of fois gras & of scallops were beautifully presented & accompanied with wines to match each dish. The main courses of... More

We enjoyed an excellent meal at Gilpin Lodge . At first I was surprised at the size of the hotel/restaurant but the the lounges were cosy and relaxed and the welcome warm . After canapés , we moved through to a spacious dining room ( one of a number ) . The meal itself was perfect for a cold winters... More
