The cheese roll, which seem to be a Southland delicacy and are ubiiquitous around the lower South Island, was terrific. Pity I can't say the same about the coffee. A tip; ask for extra strong.

The meal was served by a very friendly host and beautifully cooked. I would recommend the Catlins Cafe to any passing traveller

We stayed at the Catlins Retreat and this was the closest place to have dinner. Judging from the menues at the B&B for other restaurants it is also the least expensive in town, what with the generally high price level in Kiwiland. I was happy with my Porterhouse steak, my wife less so with her beef.

Lovely place, but when we stopped it was a holiday weekend and there was only 3 staff to about 30 customers. I had to wait an unacceptable amount of time for a takeaway coffee. (at least mins) I hope this isnt the norm and just a bad day they were having.

Food wonderful, staff delightful and service perfect. Does coffee n cake but go for the wonderful evening meals. Very very good value in a really relaxed venue. Forget any where else.
