I had booked ahead online via Agoda as I wanted to be certain I had a decent place to stay after the first day on the boat. I paid $25 for a standard twin room. I think this was rather expe..."nsive but I know you always pay more via Agoda. I could have just taken my chances and booked a place when I arrived which is what most other passengers did. They paid a lot less then me but didn't have such a nice room as mine so it's clearly a trade off. My room was clean. The bathroom was spacious and the shower had hot water, in fact the water temperature was stuck on scalding hot so it made taking a shower a little unpleasant. The hotel is just a short walk from when the boat docked so I was able to walk straight there and it was nice being able to just walk past all the locals trying to get you to stay at the different hotels.   "We stayed here for one night on our way from Hua Xai to Luang Prabang on the slow boat. We called the day before to book (got the number from someone else's Tripadvisor review). When the boat arrived at Pak Beng I walked up the hill to the Monsovanh Guesthouse while my husband waited for our bag..."s to be unloaded from the boat. That way I could check us in before other people arrived of the boat. I was glad I did this as I'm not sure they got our phone booking. We did pay a cheaper rate than people who just turned up on the day because we had phoned in advance. Also, the rate we paid was about one third of the price Agoda was quoting us. Room was very clean, the shower was hot, the sheets were crisp and the fan worked well (we stayed in a cannot AC room and were plenty cool enough). It was perfect for our one night stopover. The next morning we got pastries for breakfast and sandwiches for a packed lunch, both from the Monsovanh Bakery just across the road. They were very nice... " More >

  "Away from it all"
  "After spending all day in a boat close to nature on the Mekong River, it was a pleasant surprise to come upon the Lodge for an overnight stay. It meant climbing up a long steep path, but resulted in wonderful vistas. Away the next morning at 8:30 am, there was little time to enjoy being away from ci..."vilization. We just had time to drop in to compliment the clinic, staffed on a rotating basis by French doctors, which is housed in the Lodge. Our Superior room came with dinner and breakfast, both with set menus. Breakfast was a disappointment, just one crepe with banana slices, a scrambled egg and toast. For hot water in our room, we were required to light a flame in the heater. Being hiking types, my wife and I wished we could have stayed longer to explore their trails, and to enjoy the French pastries which we saw in shop windows in tiny Pak Beng. Another time! " More >
