  "We were fortunate to get reservations at Phantom Ranch after trying for 2 years. I am told the way to get in is to go to Grand Canyon Bright Angel Lodge and ask daily if there are cancellations. (Reservations are made 1 year in advance, but there is not penalty to cancelling up to just a few days be..."fore the reservation date.) But, because we were flying in we had to have our reservation first. Phantom Ranch offers single sex dorms with bunk beds for 10 men/women. They are vary spartan, but are clean have swamp coolers, a shower, toilet and sink. These are all welcome amenities after a hike in the sun of Arizona. There are also cabins, but I know nothing of them. Meals (both an evening meal and breakfast) must be reserved in advance. We ordered the steak dinner (held at 5:00); the other options are vegetarian or stew (held at 6:30). The room is an old log cabin and fits 28 people snugly.   "We called on the day that we were driving up to the Canyon on the off chance that there would be a vacancy and lo and behold, they had a cancellation. We stayed one night. Everything was great. Simple, clean room with all the amenities. Parking was difficult to find, but that was to be expected. ..."The only inconvenience was that the front desk was located in Bright Angel next door, driving in that area is somewhat of a maze. The location couldn't be beat however, right on the south rim, with a parade of elk in front of our window at various times as a bonus. This is a great central location for exploring the south rim, and for the start of many hikes, etc. We would highly recommend this hotel as a starting point for exploring the canyon. " More >

  "Bring lots of padding if you're staying in a tent since the ground is rocky"
  "We originally booked 2 nights at site 74 on Fir Loop, and extended for another night. We were hoping that Fir loop meant lots of fir trees & soft needles on the ground. Unfortunately, the ground was hard and rocky. Even after moving the large rocks, we were using all the bedding/clothing we could fi..."nd to make sleeping on the ground in a tent more comfortable. Despite the ground, Fir Loop had nice sites. The sites weren't smashed together & there were trees that provided more separation from other sites. Everyone turned in for the night early since it dropped to the low 30s (F) at night. We were the last people awake in the area & we turned in at 10PM. With the temperature almost reaching freezing at night, the rocky ground, and the ravens making loud noises in the morning, it's not possible to get good quality sleep. The restrooms were clean, but they only have cold water and don't provide soap. The hand-dryers are loud so I wouldn't camp right beside a restroom. The sink for washi... " More >
