In the hills above Ballena National Park is nestled Costa Rica's smallest Jungle Boutique Hotel - Las Terrazas de Ballena. With its spectacular ocean views of the "Whales Tail" reef and Cano Island, the Las Terrazas de Ballena has furnishings inspired and imported from Thailand. Las Terrazas de Ballena is a three-acre compound that looks like is is floating in the jungle. The bungalows and our tropical swimming pool have the same spectacular view of the only Whale Park in Costa Rica (Ballena National Park).

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Never answers phone or email or returns messages. We tried contacting them 2 days before arrival to ask some questions. Hotel was out of power for a day and a half before contacting us by email on the afternoon of our arrival to cancel. Of course we were in the car driving. They finally called us on my cell when we were 5 minutes away to tell us about their problem. Refused to find us other lodging. Three weeks later and still has not refunded our payment. Had to call VISA to refuse payment. Booking.com has not had any luck either contacting them.

If I am paying almost $200 a night for accommodation, I expect the following: a comfortable bed, a great location, a good breakfast, excellent customer service but most importantly; a working shower! At Las Terazzas, we got only 2 of those things. The bed was very comfortable, the cabins very prettily decorated and the location with the views was lovely. The drive up and down the hill is very precarious and not for the faint-hearted though. We did not have working hot water for the shower. We had to turn it on, let it run through the lower tap until it was hot, switch to the shower where it would only run hot for 15 seconds, then switch back to the lower tap to wait for it to get hot, and repeat this. This was on the first day. No hot water for the rest of the stay nor an offer of a partial refund or a different room. Luke warm on the second day with the same inconsistent process. Last day we had to use the shower in another cabin. Had to endure the smell of gas from a faulty boiler. Owner just turned her back on me and walked away when I complained that for the price, this was unacceptable and asked for some of our money back. I usually prefer to book with properties that are owned by local people rather than chains because I like the idea of supporting the local economy but I wont do that again given the owner's response to the non-working shower. A good hotel would apologise sincerely and go out of their way to try and fix the situation rather than make you feel like you are just an annoyance when you tell them every day that the shower does not work. Breakfast was not great and one of our friends who only eats egg whites wasn't even offered a second egg. Wished we had stayed at Cristal Ballena instead. I don't think this place is worth the money at all. I have had much better value for money elsewhere in Costa Rica

We stayed for three nights at the Terrazas de Ballena. It's been an ideal place to get around the Uvita area and also to just stay "at home" and enjoy the cozy veranda with a beautiful view in your hammock or the very comfortable deck chairs. There are a lot of trees around so you might get to see monkeys, tucans and a lot of other birds. The room was very clean with a modern bathroom and always warm water. Breakfast was delicious and varied from day to day (fruits, eggs, toast, rice and beans). There was a kitchen outside, which was fully equipped with everything you need for cooking or just to have a glass of wine. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Thanks!

I found this place by reviews so I know how valuable they really are! This is a place that has 3 hidden bungalows in the most beautiful setting. I traveled with my husband and 17 year old son. The bungalows have a patio with a hammock, two over sized patio couches, an outdoor kitchenette and table for four. All looks out to the ocean in the distance and some howler monkeys nearby. There is a swimming pool that is great at the end of a busy day and a great place to chillax. The rooms are clean, comfortable and roomy. Our bed was a bit firm, but my son's was very comfortable. You could probably say all about many places nearby BUT what no other place has is Carla. Carla is reception, chef, housekeeping and daily trip adviser. She is extraordinary! She made us breakfast every morning and dinner when we didn't feel like going out. She is kind, friendly and extremely efficient at balancing all of her responsibilities. I definitely recommend this hotel but it's really Carla that has made it so exceptional!

We only stayed one night out of necessity. Primarily a 4 x 4 vehicle is essential. The hill is steep and rocky. (That shouldn't be the fine print). The steps up to the stairs to the bungalow are also steep so not accessible if anyone has an issue with climbing. The Bungalow was nice. We had a queen size bed with maybe less than 12" between the frame an the wall. The mattress is placed directly on the floor although it was comfortable. The air conditioner above Head of bed began to leak onto our heads just as we fell asleep so we had to move the bed out in order to sleep without getting wet and listened to the dripping onto the floor all night. The bathroom shower was oversized, nicely updated so I'm sure that contributed to the lack of space in the room. Only offered 2 towels in the room. (seems to be a costa rica thing) no hand towel or wash cloth. Only 2 small bars of soap for toiletries. TV worked, wi-fi was weak. The deck was very large with a nice size outdoor kitchenette only really capable of preparing a simple meal, table & chairs, hammock and loungers . The floor of the deck was in need of repair. Breakfast of host choice was included. Overall OK we would stay there again if we needed to. Overpriced for the accommodation

Very pleasant bungalow with nice linens, great balcony with hammock and view of the ocean. Lovely owner--very friendly and helpful. Nice breakfast in open eating area with nice view. Small but good pool. Great place to wind down and recover from hectic Manuel Antonio.

5 stars does not mean this is a five star hotel it means that I had a 5 star experience with 5 star service. If you are looking for a Marriott do yourself and a favor and stay in the states. I can't say enough to about the staff, as I was writing this Carla made my wife a wonderful ginger tea for a sore throat. Very generous. Did I lose wi-fi now and then? Yep, did I lose hot water one morning?, yep. did I lose power one night?...again, yep. Will I stay here again? Absolutely.

Stayed here recently but our visit was cut short due to personal reasons. Carla is unbelievably generous with her time and recommendations. She advised us on so many things . The breakfast was lovely as was Gris the cat . Stunning location with a real jungle feel . The pool is also beautiful . The road up is interesting and a 4x4 is essential but once it was done it was quite fun.

This is the place to be for a family in Uvita. Kids loved the pool. Very friendly and caring staff. Very good breakfast . Getting there is a little adventure by itself. Trains your 4x4 skills. There is a little outdoor kitchen.

Our stay here was the last stop before flying back home. The hotel (or cabanas) are really really good and the view is amazing! The staff will do anything to help you and will make sure that you have everything you need. A four-wheel drive is mandatory, it was quite a climb. But when you arrive, you won't remember that anymore. There is a small pool and there is quite a lot of wildlife. We wanted to relax a little before flying back home. This is the perfect spot! The beaches in the area are beautiful but all in a national park, so you have to pay an entrance fee. Remember to bring lunch to the beach! And this is the best spot for whale watching. The receptionist really helped us to find the best tour and we had such a great day! We say two mother humpback whales with babies!
