I recently accompanied my husband and son on a grand fly-fishing trip to Lake Rotoroa Lodge. It was a trip of a lifetime. The historic ambiance of the lodge was a nostalgic step back in time but with a luxurious touch. Bill and his wife Jenny and their staff were spectacular hosts and made us feel very welcome. Allistar, the... More

To get to the Lodge you have to drive 5 miles from the main road - surely it can't be here, and then you arrive and take five minutes to take in the view - it is simply beautiful. The welcome was warm and friendly, the rooms gorgeous (get a front one if you can). Only one of us fished... More

We stayed at the lodge for several nights, and were swept off our feet by the staff's warm nature and service-plus hospitality. The lodge very much in theme (hunting/fishing lodge), but with a high-end, luxurious touch. The chef Alistair is a wizard - cannot speak highly enough of his cooking - we stayed 5 nights & he presented a terrific... More

The welcome we received at Lake Rotoroa was amazing. The lodge is set in the most stunning of locations and Bill and his staff cannot do enough to make your stay memorable. Our room was so comfortable with stunning views over the lake. My husband spent the time fly fishing with one of the guides and said it was a... More

We spent 3 nights at the lodge and it was sublime. The historic building is lovely but they have all of the modern conveniences that you would need. The view is spectacular and we had it from our oversized room and from our dinning room table . The food is chef driven and ample . Lunches were made for us... More

Bill and Jenny treat their guests as family, very welcoming and extremely accommodating. There is a full range of activities available, it is not just a fishing lodge, although they are well organised to cater for trout fishing, but we also enjoyed the bush walks, the quad bikes and trap shooting. The scenery is fantastic. The lodge has successfully combined... More

Lovely lodge on one of the most beautiful lakes in NZ. I was there in January 2012. Wonderful Hospitality. The manager and his wife were fantastic. Fantastic trip on the Lake in the lodge boat - highly recommend this. I felt like I was in Switzerland not NZ.

This is a fly fishing lodge only. If you cannot fly fish, sight fishing, don't go. The guides are great, the fishing is great, as sight fly fishing results in 3 fish each a day. The fish are all 5 to 7 lbs. Brent and Sharlene are leaving in two months, and the place was bought by Everland, not to... More

We have been to NZ four times in the last three years, but unfortunately did not stay at Lake Rotoroa Lodge until our third trip. We liked it so much we returned only nine months later. If you are going to NZ to fish, tour the wine country, bird watch, or just enjoy the scenery consider adding LRL to your... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Location and SettingAlong a quiet country lane that winds its way through the Gowan River valley lies Lake Rotoroa Lodge. It is nestled at the northern tip of New Zealand's spectacular Southern Alps. This isolated and unspoiled location is surrounded by the forests of the Nelson Lakes National Park. Lake Rotoroa is considered the jewel in the crown of the park: its tranquil waters reflect a magnificent vista of snow-capped mountains and lush native bush. From the lodge's idyllic and romantic lakeside location, guests can gaze along the length of Lake Rotoroa to the towering peaks of the Travers Range, and lapping at the foot of the lodge lawn, the waters of the Gowan River may just cause them to become lost in thoughts of some of the world's finest brown trout fishing that can begin just a few short steps away. Enjoy this stunning view from the lodge's open-fired sitting room, dining room or, indeed, from many of our guest rooms. The Nelson Lakes National Park, with its alpine environment, is just one of three National Parks that surround the city of Nelson (1½ hours away). The Abel Tasman National Park is coastal (offering some of the very finest, golden beaches in the world, together with the internationally renowned Abel Tasman Track) and New Zealand's most recently designated National Park, Kahurangi, is one of the world's great wilderness environments. There are times of the year when it really is possible to swim in the ocean in the morning and ski in the mountains in the afternoon! ... more   less
