We came here hoping to cross to goat island. The water was too rough for this in December. The beach was fairly nice, but the parking lot was scary, full of seedy looking characters. This place was not worth the trip.

I used to live on Maui, and I know that camping on the beach is a bit sketchy. It's just not easy with all the alleged rip-off by itinerants and others who prey on visitors. I really wanted to camp, though, as I was on a budget, and I'd read some great reviews about Malaekahana. When I arrived it was...

This is the third year in a row that I have stayed at Friends of Malaekahana. I love the beach and the weather is of course amazing. We try a new camp site each time and found our favorite in the back. There were no cats back there and a squirt gun educated the chickens to stay away rather effectively....

I am a seasoned camper and very accustomed to traveling ‘rough’, especially in the third world. I also travel A LOT for work, where I am paid to stay in high end accommodations. Both have their merits, for different reasons, and you only sometimes get what you pay for. This place was a case in point. Beautiful location, but the...

We were very impressed with the site itself. It was peaceful, right by the ocean, & well maintained. We enjoyed a relaxing first night here and were looking forward to staying for another night. However, we were woken up early in the morning by an angry park staff member who greeted us with racial slurs. Later in the day, while...

We stayed in the most beautiful little grass shack right on the beach. It was heavenly falling asleep to the sound of the water lapping on the beach and waking to the most stunning sunrises. The grounds were so well kept and there was a lot of wildlife roaming around. The staff were very welcoming, Eric, brought us wood, freshly...

At Friends of Malaekahana the person who leased the land from the state is cutting the trees and bushes down at an alarming rate. Vegetation that I have seen for over 20 years has been hacked off to make roads, widen roads, make flat dirt areas for more rental structures. As you go through the tree tunnel to the right...

It's difficult to decide on what aspect to begin with... This was absolutely my best vacation ever and I went on it solo! I wanted to get away and relax, the North Shore of Oahu is the most relaxing place in the world and Friends of Malaekahana Campground is the most relaxing place on the North Shore.
The beach and...

Camping in Oahu is hard if you don't know the parks and the permit process. We didn't and planned this to be the last of the parks we stayed... Big mistake, we should have set this one first! We would have stayed here the 2 weeks no problem, staff is friendly and want you to feel that this is the...

I spent a totally wonderful stay at the Friends of Malaekahana Campground just south of Kahuku Hawaii (and north of Laie), between 15 to 20 November 2010. Chris, the simply lovely gal at the front desk of this fine, privately-run campground, was very helpful - she placed me in campsite 1G during my week-long stay there (the best tent-camping section...
