This out-of-the-way place started its life as the ancestral home for a Portuguese family a century ago, and it still radiates the kind of warmth that only a well-lived-in home can do. The rooms are quirky, bright, and comfortable. Breakfast is delicious, and the "family" you join around the big table is generous with tips about what's best on the... More

We were looking for a place to stay before starting our week in Kaanapali and wanted to explore Makawao for a few days first. This was the perfect place. It's located just outside of Makawao in a neighborhood, in an old historic home that has been carefully restored by the owner, Cherie. The rooms are tasteful and comfortable. We were... More

Wonderful home away from home in Upcountry Maui...innkeeper Cherie has mastered the art of extending hospitality. This is a beautifully restored traditional Hawaiian home of days past. Cool breezes and great access to the North Shore, stay here for a genuine resort free break. Breakfast is an assortment of breads, cereals, fruits and teas, coffee, juice. Eggs are available for... Makawao is really a cute paniolo upcountry town - lots of interesting shops and little restaurants, and don't miss the malasadas at Komoda's Bakery. In this area, the place to stay is the Hale Ho'okipa Inn. This B&B has several rooms, all nicely furnished and very clean. We stayed in February and we left the windows open to listen to... More

This was our first time staying in a B&B.. I think we are spoiled for life now! The bar has been set very high Everywhere you look you see love! from the little pagoda-like light by the fence where you park your car to this amaizing photo on the kitchen wall of this little girl dancing hula.. from the warm... My husband and I have been to Maui several times and like the "upcountry" are the best. It's cooler, lusher, and less touristy. The Bed and Breakfast we stayed in was in an old house with an expansive garden furnished in and one-of-a-kind pieces and antique decorations. A generous breakfast offering yogurt, cereal, various breads, jams, and fresh fruits, or... More

Aloha Folks, Mahalo for your review. It was great to get to know you during your lengthy stay. I am so lucky to have such wonderful guests. As always, I never stop trying to improve the experience at the b&b . A historic home is not for everyone, but the charm and good mana at Hale Ho'okipa speaks for itself.... More

On my first visit to Maui, my boyfriend and I stayed in the Hibiscus room for two nights. I chose Makawao for its proximity to the Road to Hana and Haleakala. Hale Ho'okipa is an old restored home and still a work in progress, according to the host. The room had a slightly damp smell to it, perhaps because there... More

Aloha, Mahalo for your review...This was the week of the Maui Monsoon...a wild and wet week it was. I don;t think anyone could find a place upcountry that did not feel damp that week. I use the dehumdifier in the rooms and parlor area, rotating them daily during a wet spell. This particualr room took the full force of the... More

Cherie was a warm and gracious hostess in this fine old Portugese family home that she has reclaimed and rebuilt in the upcountry rain forest. Our room was fine; comfortable bed and adequate bath. Cherie has a sitting room chock full of local color, Hawaiian history books, local travel guides, and much more. The continental breakfast was as delicious as... More

We stayed at this B&B for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our room was small but comfortable. The breakfasts were amazing, with a buffet of fresh fruits and all kinds of bread, cereals, etc. Enjoyed chatting with owner, her helpers, and other guests, over breakfast. This house was built in the '20s by a Portuguese family. Decor is wonderful

If you want a truly special experience, then stay at the Hale Ho'okipa Inn on Maui. The owner, Cherie Attix, has created a little bit of heaven on earth. The decor, food and hospitality is excellent. I stayed in the Rose room with my own bath...the tub had feet! So quaint! Breakfast included a fresh fruit salad (from her garden),... More
