We visited in March and absolutely loved it. It is right near the farmer's market and within walking distance of everything downtown. We arrived at night and were a bit thrown off at first because the area was a little bit scary, but it turned out to be absolutely beautiful the next day and everything we could have wanted.

Downtown Hilo is just that. A busy Pacific rim city, with the cultural accouterments one would expect from the 2nd largest city in Hawaii. Traveler's who don't understand that and instead are chasing the lush tropical dream may need to look elsewhere for their accommodations but if access to action is your goal, the well appointed newly remodeled rooms are... Best location if you want to be directly in town. Stayed here a couple of times, no hassle be-on-your-way style digs. Pleased with the accommodations, pretty much what other folks say. Great for a few nights, next to all the restaurants, theaters, and grocers. Comfortable traveler lodgings. Unobstructed 50 ft walk into farmer's market, literally next-door. These guys lucked out... Great find for a overnighter in Hilo and Paul's place for morning get me up. Near the farmers market and music in old town.

This is a great little hotel which doesn't look like much from the outside but has been redone on the inside very nicely. Still needs some work-the old fashioned bath made into a shower looks sweet but not practical and would be horrible for an elderly couple. Better if just put modern shower in. Window needed replacing or repair screen.... More

I wanted to love this quaint inn, but alas, it wasn't in the cards. Our stay started a bit rocky when our code failed to open the front door (turns out the owner was a number off). When we finally reached him, he couldn't reset it remotely and had to drive in to let us in. Really nice guy; he... More

Consider the Pakalana an automated hotel. The owner emails you a PIN number that is the entry code for the front door and your room door. Guests arrive and let themselves in with nobody around except for the jobless dudes that hang out right across the street from the entrance. Because of that, I was nervous about the car parked... Our family has been staying at Pakalana Inn regularly throughout the year whenever we're in Hilo. My husband, our two canine girls, and I feel it fits our lifestyle rather well. Our girls feel at home and know exactly where to go when we're there. It's like our home away from home. It's comfortable and cozy. We are able to... More

My husband and I needed a place to stay in Hilo for one night (after a late-arriving flight) before we would drive to our rental house the next day. I was surprised how lacking the choices were in Hilo. We are not B&B people--we prefer solitude, quiet, and don't like people in our business. The Pakalana was quite the opposite... More

Really good location in town, brand-new and clean inside, free wifi and Kona coffee. Didn't meet any staff in person but the owner called to make sure everything was okay and was friendly on the phone. Really liked having the keypad entry and not having to do a formal check-in process. If you book online make sure you read the... More
