We stayed in this hotel about two miles outside Pierowall on Westray for one night as a family of five (3 adults, two children) occupying two rooms. The family room was enormous, and easily fitted the four of us; the double room was smaller but still extremely spacious. Both rooms had bathtubs, which at this stage of our trip were... More

We found that the current owners were living off the reputation of the previous ones. the awards and recommendations proudly shown on the web site were not earned in the current ownership. Maintenance in the rooms was poor, food terrible and a bar that could only serve bottled beer. It raises mediocrity to new heights! More

Spent one week at Cleaton House this June and will definitely come back: the hosts are a gem, the food is brilliant and the integrated pub is a great place to meet locals. Best room is "Lameger" - huge and light. Definitely the best place on the northern Orkneys! More

We were welcomed by the resident black labradors Rosie and Lizzie and the human welcome was as warm! Lovely big room with great views and super food - we had a great stay and would really recommend the hotel and the island. Very friendly hosts and we will return. More

Delightful small hotel. Our room was large and very comfortable with views along the coast from one window and inland from the other. Owners very friendly and helpful - we felt very much at home, although we were the only guests that night. Our meal too was excellent, with a choice of 3 starters, mains and desserts. More

A warm welcome greeted us on our arrival. Our room had wonderful views and an exceptionally comfortable bed. The owners and staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. Breakfast and dinner were well cooked and enjoyable, the produce was all local and the main meals were accompanied by vegetables from the garden and were delicious, so were the desserts! A... More

We went to Westray for a day trip and stopped at Cleaton House hoping for lunch having seen the signs on the road from the ferry that said "open for bar meals". The bar was empty apart from the new (2006) owner. We ordered drinks and then started to study the blackboard menus. The owner then explained that he didn't... More

Stayed here one evening in July. Pleasant hotel - atmospheric bar area - idyllic island. What let it down was the dreadful food. We met up with friends who were staying elsewhere as we expected our hotel to be superior to their bed and breakfast. What a mistake. We ate in the lounge bar and what we were given would... More

The Cleaton House is a small hotel on the remote island of Westray, in Orkney. Its new owners have taken it on this year, having worked at Lloyds of London in a previous existence. The hotel sits just off the main (almost the only) road on the island. The rooms are large and comfortable, the food is excellent (the vegetables... More
