Very welcoming family run pub, bar pleasant and very well priced!! Only place in north Devon you can still get a pint for £3!! The pub boxer 'George' is a bonus, wants to be everybody's friend! 'Budge' the parrot who sits in the widow is also very entertaining!! Have to try their steaks...best cooked steak iv eaten in a long... More

We visited in August 2011 (no option for this). We stayed on a campsite up the road and wanted to go for a few ciders in a pub we have visited before. Both times we had a great time and the food was great too. Great we could bring our dog too. The cider was so good we had a... More

Chose the Smugglers Rest over the Ship Aground for a pint and lunch after a walk on the coast path; what a mistake to make! Interior is like stepping back 40 years; perfectly pleasant landlady but the food grim. We chose chilli and rice from the specials board, what arrived rather tardily was a plate of watery mince heavily chillied... More

It's a bit scruffy but it's relatively cheap. There's only a municipal car park across the road, which is a pain when it's raining and also means that someone has to leave their bed early in the morning to buy a new ticket. The TV in the room's small and the signal-strength is poor. Having said all that, the bed's... More

Had a meal here which on the whole was nice but was put off by the person who brought it out as it looked liike he just went to the kitchen and put on a apron underneath was badly fitted jeans and t-shirt.Also in the resturant the door to the kitchen kept getting slammed shut which after about 10 times... Had an evening meal here at the height of the tourist season. Slightly gloomy, 70s style interior with fake ceiling beams, wall lights etc. Somewhat limited menu but very reasonable prices for a pub with a captive market (the area is packed with campsites and caravan parks). Staff friendly and parrot is a novelty bonus. Decent hand pulled ales and... More

We stayed for a week at the smugglers, 2 couples in double rooms, beds were comfy, breakfasts were more than enough, wonderfully cooked and plenty of choice could do with a printed menu though staff were great, very friendly would go back any time. Village is beautiful plenty of walks and fantastic views.

In honesty this was probably the worst place I've stayed. The staff were very short with you was almost like you were in the way as opposed to paying thier wages. It was in need of updating and a little dirty, my wife had an electric shock from a very old hairdryer. The breakfast was very mediocre and took a... More

We booked at the last minute, ( Thursday, to arrive on the Saturday) and the only room left was a Family room. As there was only two of us the owner said we could have it at a reduced rate. The room was spacious, clean and with all the facilities you would expect. My only issue with the room and... More

Its my second stay at this property and it has not changed in any way, there is still all rubbish cluttering up the reception area which a few black bags would sort out' The rooms were clean but could do with a lick of paint here and there to smarten them up,beds where comfy. The people running the place were nice... More
