By returning frequently one might be accused of over familiarity. Not so!The welcome is always very friendly and helpful with luggage etc.Tea is a "pick me up" after the journey and the cake could be Huw's mouth watering chocolate brownie-not to be missed. There is constant improvements to the buildings and the new Orangery is a definitive must.Dinner and the excellent choice... We needed a break, a really important one as we had recently been bereaved. This was our first visit to the Old Rectory, and maybe that was a gamble when we needed a special time away. But how that gamble paid off, we have never been so relaxed following a two day break in a hotel. This establishment is simply... More

Overall, very welcoming and accommodating. Two things I was not keen on: - the ambiance at dinner was a little weird. Not too keen on background music and all felt a little bit like school dinner than an attempt at quality dining (as another couple commented to me, there was a feeling that if you didn't finish your greens ,... Huw and Sam continue to get even better. Nothing to fault but everything to praise. We will be back again soon. Food is superb and wine list is excellent. Rooms are clean and well appointed. Afternoon tea is a bonus. A shame they cannot fix the weather!

This was our first visit to the Old Rectory and it certainly won't be our last. From the moment we were greeted by Huw we felt instantly at home and started to wind down. The room was immaculate and very well furnished with a quality bed and the bathroom was large and complete with Molton Brown toiletries. Afternoon tea was... More

There aren't many hotels where you get introduced to the owners and they cook all the food themselves and make you feel like one of the family. We stayed in the 'Beeches' room for two nights. The room was spacious and beautifully furnished. The shower was extremely powerful and the complimentary Molton Brown toiletries added the finishing touch. The newly... More

Huw and Sam effortlessly exude attentiveness without intrusiveness. But they combine this with an even rarer quality - anticipation of your needs. I have been guilty as anyone of disparaging British cuisine.. I was delighted to have been proved wrong. The mushroom soup was outstanding. As was the carrot cake. And the... Hi Sarah We are really pleased that you took a few days out of your rather chaotic schedule to come and spend some time here for some rest and relaxation. Your review was really kind and we are delighted that we were able to prove that British Cuisine is alive and well in deepest, darkest Exmoor! Thank you very much. More

We visited the hotel for two nights either side of a visit to Lundy in early April and we also visited two years ago. Felt completely spoiled by Huw and Sam who looked after us extremely well. The evening meals were delicious, with plenty of choice and complemented by great wines. Sitting in the new Orangery is very relaxing and... More

We came to the Old Rectory to celebrate our fortieth wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed It is difficult to find anything negative to say about this hotel. The rave reviews that this hotel has garnered in the past are quite justified. The setting, off the beaten, track a stones throw from the coast path in what I consider to... More
