We were down from London for a family party close by for one night. First impressions upon arrival was beautiful pub, lovely rooms! We arrived just before 3pm to be told by the landlady we are closing now,we said we had just driven for 2 & 1/2 hrs and could we possibly get a drink at the bar? She said... More

Lovely b&b, nice rooms, dogs allowed (at extra cost) and restaurant serving nice food. Slightly eccentric land lady who seems to be constantly stressed, but lovely and friendly and adds to the charm of the place. Recommended, we loved it.

We ate here with friends and had an excellent meal with very good, friendly service. It seems to be plain cooking but very well done, which is fine by me! It is a lovely pub in a pretty location. We will hopefully return soon.

We didnt have a great experience here today. Last year it was much better but apparently it has changed hands. There was a very batty lady running around asking strange questions to us and arguing obviously with the staff in front of us, and seemingly irritating them a lot and causing obvious staff tension. It then turns out she was... More

Visited for lunch after a walk - having visited in summer 2012 when we had a very nice meal. As before we enjoyed the very comfortable pub. I had vegetarian roasted tomatoes and pesto; with sourdough bread which was divine. Chef very friendly; nice to have a chat. Recommended.

Middle of nowhere, quiet, cosy, proper 'inn'. My wife's 40th birthday was marked by 20 or so of our family gathering at The Shears Saturday lunchtime with a set roast pork lunch for keeping it simple, drinks from the bar, we all went out for a walk for a couple of hours and they provided teas, coffees and hot chocolates... We went for lunch with family today (12 people) and had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and all of us will definitely be returning. The pub had a really nice feel to it and the staff were very attentive. One of the group is a vegan and they catered for this very well giving us two options.

We had a lovely lunch at The Shears - although it was difficult to find the way in(!) the people were extremely friendly and comfortably attentive. The food was absolutely delicious - we all had something different as a main course (battered haggis, steak with mushrooms and cabbage, kedgeree) and we all really enjoyed what we chose. The steak was... More

I stayed as part of a family group (all adults) ahead of a funeral. Most of this review reflects the thoughts of us all as discussed later. All of us had travelled long distances the day of our stay (From Wales, Lincolnshire, North and West Yorkshire). We were booked in for B&B with four rooms booked for 1 night, We... More

Having just moved into the area this was our first evening out with friends for dinner. We were very disappointed with our food, it was expensive and tasteless, the chips were oily and my Schnitzel was tasteless and soggy, we won't return there to eat although the restaurant is very nice.

We are very sorry that you had a disappointing experience. We believe that we are a quality driven pub/restaurant and have built up a loyal following of customers. We take pride in the food we serve and would never let a plate leave the kitchen we weren't happy with. Fortunately we don't receive many complaints, however we take all complaints... More
