The historical value of the visit was worth the wait and price. I would return, my spouse won't.

We had a family event on January 27, 2012 in which 15 of us gathered at the Spread Eagle for lunch. Some family members came from out of state. Our server, Chad, was very knowledgeable and helpful re menu items. The clam chowder was outstanding. Everyone loved their meal. The crab cakes were a favorite. I had an open-face beef... More

I was born and raised in northwestern and northcentral Ohio. Until this past week, I had never heard of the Spread Eagle Tavern & Inn. And, when my beloved 80-year-old parents asked me to drive them to meet friends for lunch at this establishment, I was highly dubious. Come on. . ."spread eagle tavern"?? It sounded like a gosh-awful dive... More

I grew up in northeast Ohio and on a recent visit back home, came to the Spread Eagle Tavern. The Tavern and Inn is beautifully decorated, food delicious and rooms filled with period furnishings and colonial perfection. Creative use of space, especially loved the "stalls" in which our booth sat and the signature fireplace which anchors the entire Tavern. Was... More

My family and I love this place and we are Democrats! Yes, it is true that the pictures of the owner with Dan Quaile and Newt Gingrich are really shoved in your face, but once you look past those pictures, the place is amazing. Food is great and you are allowed to walk around the entire building all day if... More

Very lovely Inn to say the least. Every room is tastefully restored and decorated. Interesting history also. If you are into "ghosts' there are several who occupy the Inn. One is a male who is pretty much harmless - he always longed to live at the Inn so now in his after life he does. The other is a women... More

We just had lunch with a car club which I couldn't wait to show off our favorite restaurant in Hanoverton. Most of the group was from Cleveland and we wanted to show them that we have good restaurants in the Salem area. My husband and I and our friends have eaten there many times but not since Februrary. We are... More

This restaurant needs to take a hard look at itself, and stop relying on past reputation. Everything except the atmosphere has gone downhill in the past few years. They used to serve a delicious bread with the meals. Now it's just tasteless white bread. More than once, they meat has been dry. One gets the feeling that if you don't... More

In the late 1980's it was a destination restaurant, in the 1990's it was more of a political backdrop ... I'm sad to report that in 2009 it has gone way down hill.... Service is SLOW and staff does not know the menu, PRICE is HIGH, food is mediocre at best, my risotto was like paste and cold, plate presentation... More

The Spread Eagle is hands down our favourite restaurant in the greater Ohio Valley/Pittsburgh area—and since it's over an hour from Pittsburgh (where there is a super sushi restaurant), that should tell you how much we LOVE it. Fantastic food, bend-over-backwards service, and incredible surroundings. It is almost overwhelmingly terrific. The few times we've had an order miscue, our waitress... More
