Arkaroola is a private wilderness area preserved and run by the Sprigg family since the late 1960s. This is due to the vision of Reg Sprigg, one of Australia's greatest geologists. As a result of the Spriggs' efforts anyone can now visit and appreciate this fantastic wilderness area. It reminded me of Yosemite, one of the world's great national parks.... More

What everyone else said but I would hate to see this place ruined with fancy 5 star blah. Snobs and Toorak Travellers can stay in the city, this place has history, passion and world notoriety on several fronts. Don't wreck Arkaroola but do go there. Tread lightly and do some reading prior to really enhance the understanding. I camped in... More

We stayed three nights in Arkaroola in October this year. We were unable to obtain accommodation in the motel (Mawson Lodge) and next level (Callitris Lodge) units. The Mawson units appear to be booked solid with bus groups, so independent travellers are unable to get access to the best accommodation at the village. There were four of us travelling and... More

Arkaroola is showing its age and lack of investment in facilities. The location is stunning but the poor amenities spoil the experience. Accommodation pricing is at the upper limit and even given its remote location, does not represent value for money. The whole site needs a redesign and updating to make it more faithful to the eco-resort tag. For example,... More

Arkaroola had magnificent countryside all around and was worth visiting just for this, however the village could have been fantastic and was definately not. Don't get me wrong-the staff was 100% friendly and helpful so I have no criticisms here but the accomodation and restaurants were of variable quality. The restaurant and bar had no working airconditioning for starters and... More

We had a glorious few days in Arkaroola, enjoying the scenery and tackling some of their well prepared and challenging 4WD tracks. We would highly recommend the Echo Back Track, experienced 4WDers need not be overly put off by the pricetag or the 'extreme' rating - we would have rated it as difficult only. As for paying $40, it's a... More

We stayed for two nights in September. Think carefully when you are planning to go as it was over 30 then and the dust storm was unpleasant. We also got one blow-out going there ... and one coming back. Luckily there is a tyre shop in the village that helped us out. The guy probably makes a fortune. If you... More

This is a beautiful part of the world, and this place has a lot of potential but.... The accommodation we stayed in (the basic rooms) are desperately in need of a bit of work, lino way peeling off the bathroom bench, the rooms were freezing, curtains drabby, and beds creaky. It reminded me of somewhere you'd stay on school camp... More

Arkaroola offers a great "outback" experience in the northern Flinders Ranges (known as the Gammon Ranges) in South Australia, Australia's driest state. It is an isolated and magnificant setting - accessible by dirt road with the nearest towns of any size about two hours' drive. The night sky is full of stars. When we visited it was fairly busy (peak... More
