A common method of visiting a major US city on a modest budget for hotel and dining is to find a hotel on the periphery of the metropolitan area, which is also easily accessible to the city's transportation system. In this way it is common to find moderately priced hotels. This was our method in our visit to the Niagara Falls, in September 2014. Our hotel was the Scottish Inn, 1346 Sheridan Drive, Kenmore NY, which is north of Buffalo, NY and south east of Niagara Falls, NY. The Positives: The Scottish Inn is located near a major intersection, Sheridan Drive and Military Road, in Kenmore, NY. Access to NFTA Metro bus lines are convenient, but for the bus service. The bus line that runs along Sheridan Drive, bus route #35, took us to an affordable and relatively clean laundromat on Sheridan Drive and Belmont Avenue, (which is in the same building as a Dunkin' Donuts restaurant), and to the door step of the upscale Wegmans' supermarket on Alberta Drive. The bus route #35 has bus stops near the hotel. The frequency service on this route is an inconvenient 1 hour! Bus route #20, to downtown Buffalo and to the Greyhound Station, is about a five-minute walk from the Scottish Inn, Kenmore. The closest bus stop is on Sheridan Drive and Elmwood Avenue. The fare is a flat $2.00 per ride without transfer privileges. For $5.00 the rider receives a day pass on all of Metro NFTA bus lines. The trip between the Sheridan Drive and Elmwood Avenue stop is about 30 minutes. The frequency of service on this route is good. From the Greyhound station, NFTA Metro bus route #40 runs between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NY. The trip is about 1 hour. The frequency of service is about 40 minutes. The Scottish Inn, Kenmore, informed me that travel to Niagara Falls from the hotel is possible by bus route #20 to the Greyhound terminal. (From there the obvious choice of bus travel to the Niagara Falls is either a Greyhound bus or Metro NFTA bus route #40. Either way works fine.) In theory, one can conveniently get to Niagara Falls from the Scottish Inn, Kenmore by a westbound bus, on bus route #35, and a transfer to a northbound bus on bus route #40, along River Road (= Niagara Street). This travel is also reversible in going from Niagara Falls to the Scottish Inn. However, in practice, expect a long wait at the transfer point, along River Road/Niagara Street between the two routes in both directions between the Scottish Inn and Niagara Falls. You wouldn't want to try this in rainy weather or in very cold weather. Other positives: The location of the Scottish Inn from restaurants, from Wegmans' supermarket, from laundromats and so on is convenient. The hotel itself is ran by a friendly family with young children. The service was warm, friendly and responsive. Our room had a king size bed, two tables, two chairs, two night tables, dresser, an ample and clean refrigerator, microwave oven, refrigerator, coffee maker, lamps, and air conditioner. All of this at an affordable $260 for four nights. Our room was clean, as were the coffee maker, refrigerator, and bathroom. The Wi-Fi at Scottish Inn was fine. The negatives: Our room was far from the central hot water heater. Thus, a whole lot of water was wasted in order to take a short hot shower. The heating is done by central heating and was not turned on during our visit mid September. My wife was cold most of the time. Lastly, if the hotel is this affordable, just think of what kind of guests the hotel attracts. Because of the obviously local guests, we did not have a good night sleep because of the noise; and because of the guests of the Inn's guests coming and going all night long (Friday and Saturday nights); and from too loud television sets; and because of thin walls and a very creaky ceiling. We did not sleep well because of these things and because of our fear of the obviously local guests and their guests at the Scottish Inn, Kenmore. When we left the Scottish Inn, Kenmore, for Cleveland Ohio, on Monday morning, we were relieved in spite of our wonderful time at the Niagara Falls and Wegmans, in Amherst.…
