The location is beautiful and right on the sea. Since it wasn't whale season we practically had the hotel to ourselves (one other room was occupied) which we enjoyed for the peace and quiet. This turned out to the most relaxing part of our trip through S. Africa. The room was large and the patio terrific. We climbed to the... More

The lodge's location is perfect for whale watching, beautiful sunset, and watching dolphins swimming across the sea. It was not the season to see whales for us, but the sunset and the dolphins were plenty satisfying. Tina, the manager, was very helpful, and the restaurant next door was convenient. The cleanliness was not the best, and there were only 3... More

My husband and I checked into Whale Sanctuary Lodge as part of our local honeymoon in December 2011. We booked the Orca Room/Honeymoon Suite and we were disgusted by the cleanliness of the hotel. The shower head and bath jets had rust and mould growing on them, the tiles were so dirty- that they looked a completely different colour when... More

The Whale Sanctuary Lodge management response: “We regret being targeted here in this nasty and specific manner. These 2 guests spend 22 hours in this room only to come out fuming into the reception office the following day, demanding immediate refund on the spot while at the same time insulting and racially abusing the staff. A case against them has... More

We stayed 5 nights, most enjoyable. The location is excellent, with perfect views of ocean and whales, with intermittent views of dolphins from the balcony. Hostesses very friendly and goes the extra mile to assist in any needs and requirements. Walkerbay next to De Kelders, also a must to see. Very tranquil and serene.

I have to admit we thought we were staying in Hermanus but post codes are a strange thing BUT, on arrival at De Kelders, Gransbaii we thought we'd took a wrong turn off the N2. Prudence took us to our "room" I had to ask if we were in the right place. OMG, talk about quality!!!! My camera does not... More

We stayed two nights in the Orca suite in early November. Arriving in the dark it was a little difficult to find and thank goodness for SatNav! However, the receptionist did say they had got worried about us and had tried to call us a few times to check we were ok but our phone was switched off so top... More

Contrary to Google this resort is NOT located in Hermanus (which is not the best place to watch whales anyway) but in the tranquil village of Gansbaai; only 45 km from Hermanus). We booked a great room (the honeymoon suite happened to be available...) and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it ! Very helpful and friendly staff with a... More

This place is untouched and the choice for people with real taste. All the whales are on this side of the bay and are viewed from ones bed in some rooms. I proposed to my girlfriend at this lodge and am so thankful I didn't chose other accommodation in Hermanus. Whale Sanctuary Lodges staff are extremely friendly and attentive which... More

I think the listing of the Lodge is misleading since we thought it's in or very close to Hermanus. Instead it's in De Kelders which is next to Gansbaai (which has its own listing). While Hermanus is busy with a selection of good restaurants De Kelders/Gansbaai offers absolutely nothing but the view. So if you're after the view, don't want... More

Forget the binoculars - the whales are right in your face. We had to close the bedroom window at night because of the noise they were making sometimes. This luxury guesthouse is located at the other end of the Walkers Bays, opposite Hermanus, which can be seen in the distance. I have been to Hermanus many times before because this... More
