What a total let down. when I read all the prior reports of the Lodge I was put off and after spending 2 nights there, what a shocker. I was embarresed for the guests with us both local and a couple from Germany. Sorry but it is the last place on earth I would let people I know go to..... More

Hi Shirls, Thanks for taking the time to send in your review, although not what we would like to hear. I will respond to each of your issues and please bear in mind that I have visited over 150 different safari lodges in Southern Africa and all the major reserves throughout Southern Africa. So I know exactly what else is... More

I travelled to umkumbe with my mom and sister from may 5th - 7th and stayed for 3 nights. My mom had been to the sabi sands area 9 years ago at a much more expensive lodge but with my sister and I paying as well we opted for a better deal. For the price and area you can not... More

We have just returned from a four night stay at Umkumbe which topped off brilliantly our adventure packed three week holiday in SA with our three older children aged 15 - 23. Jason our guide was very knowledgable, brilliant at tracking plus great company. To see Leopard hunting a couple of metres away from us not once but twice and... More

Umkumbe is a small 6 guest room lodge at the end of the (dirt) track that doesn't cost the exorbitant rates (IMHO) other lodges do. But not difficult to navigate to and we were in a small low Honda Jazz (aka Fit). The rooms were basic but fine and included A/C. Food same description and hit the right sport for... More

We've stayed for 2 nights at Umkumbe and had a wonderfull time. Ons the first game drive, we got a fantastic view of around 17 lions and a leopard in a tree and rhino. Jason and Moses did a great job with the tracking. The accomodation itself offers all one needs for a holliday in the area for down to... More

We traveled as a group of 6 (my husband and I and 2 older kids - 17 and 11, and 2 adult friends) - and spent 4 nights in Umkumbe. We arrived through the Nelspruit airport from Cape Town, the drive from the airport to Umkumbe was about 2 hours. Our 2 hrs drive from the airport was uneventful. We... More

Hi, Thanks for your review. Celeste (ower at the Lodge) asked me to reply. We are sorry to hear of the electricity issues you experienced. It certainly was not our intention. Unfortunately the whole lodge started experiencing electricity issues at about the same time as you arrived. This also unfortunately co-incided with the long weekend, and because of our location,... We wanted a relaxed and genuine safari experience and we got it. Owners Herman and Celeste made us feel like personal guests. We saw the Big 5 on our very first game drive with Herman and it just kept getting better. Each day was a new adventure in the Bush with different animals, birds, insects and plant life. The lodge... Our very first safari experience on our two-week trip to South Africa in November 2011 was at the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. We enjoyed our stay at the cozy, unpretentious Umkumbe Safari Lodge. Our guide, Jason was very knowledgeable about all aspects of the reserve, including not only the animals, but also the birds, insects and plant life. On our... More

We finished off our Kruger trip last week with a couple of days at Umkumbe and had a great time. Jason and Moses worked exceptionally hard at finding the animals for us and the a couple of close encounters which will live on. Jason's knowledge not just on the big mammals but on all the insects, reptiles, birds and smaller... More

I stayed at Umkumbe Safari Lodge for three nights in early January 2012. It was fantastic from start to finish. Umkumbe is an unpretentious place: friendliness, with a personal touch, made me feel welcome from the start. The feel is more of a small family business, run by people who love what they do, than a slick hotel that offers... More
