An ideal location to break your journey to or from the garden route. Close to N2, easy to find and park, good restaurant across the road for your evening meal and quiet at night for a good nights sleep.

We had not intended to stay here but the tourist office suggested it as a good place for a cold beer to review the information they had given us. It did not take long for us to ask to see the rooms and decide to stay. The location is close to good restaurants and their cafe served a beautiful breakfast... More

Stayed in the cottage for 1 night as family of four. Well equipped, nicely decorated, very clean and comfortable. Nice pool. But the service...just amazing. Sorted out a restaurant for dinner for us, quickly provided additional towels for swimming, sorted out a minir maintenance problem quickly, lovely breakfast with excellent service, very professional and organized with account settlement- and Swellendam... A friendly welcome and clear introduction to the surroundings were given. A swimming pool to cool down is available. The room nr. 1 has all the luxury except an aircondition. You will be spoiled with a generous sized room, a bath and a grand shower. Your car can be parked in front of your room. They have an own restaurant... More

We wanted to stay for one night on our way from Knysna to Cape town. Everything was fine, clean rooms, small pool, friendly service. But nowhere to go to near. From 6 p.m. the area seemed absolutely deserted. Nice little shop.

Spent 24 hours in Swellendam and African Shades was a nice stopover. Clean and spacious room, nice staff. Loved the reastaurant across the street, La Connection.

African Shades is a nice B&B with cute appartments. It is the ideal place to spent a night on the way from Cape Town to Mosselbay where the Garden Route starts. The staff is very nice and helpful. The rooms were tidy and clean and decorated with a little African influence. Only negative thing is that there is no w-lan.... More

We came to Swellendam on our first visit to South Africa. Not knowing what to expect, we were very pleasantly surprised by the friendly welcome we received. We stayed in the family cottage and it was just perfect. Swellendam is a charming little town and it's very safe to go our at night for a stroll. The B&B is conveniently... More

If you are looking for a neatly, but modestly, furnished B & B that offers very affordable accommodations, the African Shades is for you. The owners, Quilene, Hein and Wyand, are young and very enthusiastic, with an impressive need to please. The best of the six rooms is named the "Luxury Suite." The B & B has a large swimming... More
