Since 1958, Mount Desert Campground has been providing clean and quiet grounds for campers to enjoy! While you won't find frills and gimmicks here, you will find beautiful wooded sites located along the salt water shore of Somes Sound. We take great pride in ensuring our camper's stay is a pleasant one, which is why we also provide the most up-to-date facilities. This campground is in the most beautiful location. Our site was beautiful & the tent pads are large (wooden). We were in spot 3E which was beautiful and on the hillside. The only negative for us was our bath house. The one assigned to our spot was very small with only one toilet, one shower, and one sink…. Which was highly used. This meant waits to use the bathroom and etc… strangely the other bath houses had several bathrooms & etc… so perhaps other spots have better experience. The showers are pay showers $1.00 for 5 minutes. Overall we had a nice stay, it’s rustic but in the best way. Also, no laundry (their is a laundromat in town but very pricey)

We’ve stayed at a lot of campgrounds and this one is by far the best we’ve ever stayed at. Seriously! It was quiet, clean, spacious, clean, beautiful views…did I mention clean? It’s also well located to Acadia and surrounding areas. Showers are $1 in quarters for 5 minutes, but the office was able to make change for us. This was the absolute best time and we’ve already started talking about how we can make coming back a plan for our family! Thanks for an amazing week!

We've been trying to find a way to make travel more affordable, we found it at Mount Desert Campground. We haven't been camping in many years, this trip was full of good memories and fun. We loved our campsite, just the right amout of privacy and water view. The bathrooms were clean and easily accessible. The only complaint was that the Gathering Place wasn't open for the season yet. We'll be back!

Mount Desert Campground remains our favorite place to camp with our family. Beautiful, well-kept grounds and sites, great staff, amazing Maine location overlooking Somes Sound, paddle and kayak rentals available, and impeccably clean bathrooms. Close to Acadia National Park entrances, hiking, biking on the Carriage Roads, the towns of Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor, among many other places of interest. The Gathering Place on the campground is such a plus, pastries and coffee for sale in the morning and ice cream for sale in the evening. Can't wait to return!

Just packed up, on the road and thinking about the fun we had. Next year will mark a decade of coming to Mount Desert Campground! And, I am already excited and looking forward to it. This campground is special and is the bar I measure other campgrounds by. It is the perfect blend of being with nature and have some comforts. Platforms for tents, clean bathrooms, and a Gathering Place to get fire wood, breakfast and ice cream. The views! They are incredible! The campground sites provide enough privacy, yet have shared space to be friendly with your neighbors. The owners of the campground make the place special. They have put a lot of thought into the grounds over years and it shows. They have not just slapped together a campground. The owners make you feel welcome and honestly appreciate your support of their business. This is why they are booked out well in advance and why we keep coming back year after year.…

We stayed at Mt. Desert for two super hot nights in July. What a gem of a campground! We got there late, just as The office was closing, and the woman there was just pinning up a map to our campsite and the paperwork for it on their bulletin board for late arrivals. The site was level with wood chips and a good size, enough for our big tent and screen house. The sites were all separated by trees so you had some privacy. There was a little light along the path opposite our site, which was convenient at night! The bathrooms were clean with hot showers (coin operated, $1 for five minutes). We had forgotten quarters, but they had them at The Gathering, a little bakery and ice cream place near the entrance. Cell service (Verizon) was good. No camp store, but they had firewood at the office. Our site had water and electric right there. Very helpful for plugging in a fan! Part of the campground was on the water. We walked around, and people were friendly. Camp staff is on site with their sites clearly marked. Acadia is about fifteen minutes away. Definitely will come back!…

This was my 30th consecutive year at MDC and 34th consecutive in Acadia. As always, it remains the best run, loveliest campground I’ve ever had there pleasure of staying in. The Craigheads hire and keep such wonderful staff, and as the pandemic allowed, it was great to have some of the perks like evening ice cream and morning breakfast and coffee back in full swing. One thing that never changes is, the beauty of the campground itself. Waterfront beautiful property is what it is, with a wonderful family-run operation putting in who knows how many hours of hard work every week to keep it beautiful. Donna and Owen are wonderful people running a wonderful operation, and I feel so lucky every year they invite us (and all of our great perennial camping neighbors) back.

I have little camping experience but would absolutely camp more often if more campgrounds were like Mount Desert Campground! The sites are all wooded, so you feel relatively secluded/private, but the restrooms are just a short distance away. It's fun to wander the grounds with the floats, boat launch and nature trail at different times of day. You can watch hermit crabs and crabs in the water. I was really impressed with the cleanliness of the restrooms/showers! The trees surrounding the area kept the wind out which was nice. And I was shocked there weren't any major puddles under our site even after 2" of rain one night.

We loved everything about this campground. Our spot was near the water and while at first the spots seemed close together, it never felt cramped. The shower house was clean and just a short walk from our site (there are 6 spread throughout). We rented the canoe one day and paddled the sound. We even got to see an eagle nest with a juvenile still in the nest. The location was great, we were a short drive from all the hiking we wanted to do on both sides of the island as well as Bar Harbor for a couple of dinners out. The only thing that could have made our stay better would have been if the shuttle were running while we were there.

Spent 4 nights here and had a wonderful time. Our site was right on the water. Campground was very clean and quiet. Bathrooms and showers were clean as well. Great location for getting to all the attractions of Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Would definitely stay again.
