I loved the Canfield Hotel! It was like stepping back to the fifties with the decor. It's a historical building that has been maintained as a hotel since the late 1800's. It's clean, simple and each room has a unique, old-fashioned, decor. I found the owners and the staff friendly and helpful. With no prompting from me, the owner upgraded... More

If you are the type that likes spas, fitness centers, turn-down service, etc- the Canfield is NOT for you. If you appreciate a fun, unique atmosphere with local character you will be just fine. This is an old place with a lot of history. It was one of the cheapest places in town for the weekend. Many "long term" residents... More

The Canfield is interesting! If you are looking for the same old, bland, boring hotel, stay away. The place just exudes character out of every nook and cranny. I've stayed there twice with groups of billiard players in town for a yearly tournament. Each room seems to have its own decor. One room had macrame keys all over, another tons... More

We were just trying to find a Ed's beds to stay at for a fast night in town. Nothing high end or upscale. Well when I walked into the 40's i should have spun and ran. We didn't trying to give the place a chance. Went to the room and wow. Not nice. Smelled like MOLD, Smokey throughout the hotel... More

The local flavor of the Canfield flows from the neon sign on the outside to the cigar store indians on the inside. The throwback rooms are charming and well maintained. The karoke bar is fun and the management keeps any disturbance in check immediately. The eclectic group of people who stay at the Canfield lend to rich and rewarding experience.... More

Spend the extra money get a better room somewhere else. It's creepy everywhere the rooms look like they dug old things out of a dumpster. No joke!!! I thought I was on the tv show boiling points because we were told this was their "best' room they had! The door was open and shut right as we walked into the... More

This is a cool place to stay. If you want to sleep early get a room up high or live with the karoke. Each room is unique with different decorations put together adhock. The decor is 6oish. I know the owner and manager from the frequent stays we have experienced over the 10 years or more we have been staying... More

We've stayed at the Canfield about once every other year for sixteen years. Since the Julien Inn has been renovated into more of a luxury hotel, the Canfield is the best hotel value in downtown Dubuque. Parking is in an unprotected lot across the street, but it's free and we've never had a problem. This hotel is for tourists who... More

Scary Place. Good location. My wife and I were here for our anniversary and the "Americas River" music festival. We were immediately taken back by the outside, old, like something out of "Taxi Driver". The inside was the same way, not dirty, just Scary ? Like walking into 1972. Strange odor in the lobby like one of the older Vegas... More

We traveled to Dubuque for a party at the Star Restaurant and Lounge (great!) and waited until the last minute to secure a hotel room. All other hotels in town unexpectedly were booked due to a sports tournament, so we ended up staying at the Canfield Hotel. It is located in downtown Dubuque near the Mississippi River. Although the area... More
