Unhelpful rude staff… Not a place I would ever stay again

We just arrive from San Luis Obispo (not good experience with that hi hostel) to Santa Cruz, and, we are very happy in this hostel. Very Kindly staff, good location and prefect rooms. The only bad thing is that the hostel closed between 11 to 5. Good value if you are thinking to stay in Santa cruz for a few...

Stayed here for just one night in a private four person room. The rooms were clean and spacious and the beds were comfy.
Although we didn't make use of them, the hostel appeared to have good communal facilities such as a kitchen and laundry room.
The one annoyance was that the hostel 'closes' between 11am and 5pm - not great...

Despite the potential for this well situated, well maintained hostel to be amazing, it is hampered by some rules and policies. I arrived on a day where it was raining heavily only to find that guests are locked out of the hostel during the day between 11am and 5pm. On a sunny day, this might not seem such a hassle,...

Family and back packer friendly.
Nice rooms.
The lock out is slightly annoying but not too bad - keep the noise down and u can come home late :)

This hostel has some great points and some bad ones. The best things about the hostel are it's location, in a nice part of town just up from the beach. The cottages are also very nice and the whole place is well kept, facilities are also very good with internet, kitchens, DVD players, computers and cheap laundry. However, you are...

In regards to why the rules are in place, I think this hostel had made it quite clear. They are also a non-profit org, so having desk staff all day isn't very possible. This note is printed on the back of every receipt:
HI-Santa Cruz is housed in a city park. We are fortunate to have use of this wonderful...

I read the reviews and I thought it would be alright; but it wasn't. Basically, you wake up in the morning, you hastily grab breakfast, and then you are (sometimes rudely) chased out of your room, the door is locked, and you are stuck with no where to go for 6 hours. After they lock the door, you can't go...

The private room we had was a good size, simply decorated, and clean. The kitchen was well kitted-out, and there was plenty of space to cook and eat without stepping on other guests' toes. There was a slightly annoying 11pm curfew, and during the day you weren't allowed in your room between 11-5pm, which, again, was slightly annoying. But it...
