Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Amazingly this hostel is right by HWYs 1 and 101 making it the perfect place for an overnight stop and yet it's quiet. It was so easy to find and everyone in the hostel was so welcoming! It is just a short walk from the hostel to the High street and Higuera street, where there's lots of restaurants, cafes and shops. Everything you need to refresh yourself after a long journey and at weekends, they organise fun activities in the hostel. The dorm I stayed in had big lockers to secure valuables, which was fantastic. For breakfast, you must try the coffee and home made sourdough pancakes with maple syrup!

We stayed for one night in a private room. My first time in a hostel and I would defo recommend this one! Everyone was really friendly and beds were so comfy. I got a great night's sleep. We were even moved from an upstairs room to a downstairs one upon check-in when they saw how huge our suitcases were. Pancakes for breakfast were a very nice extra! Seems like there are lots of cool things to do in the area too but sadly we didn't have much time as we were just passing through.

I stayed here for 2 nights on my PCH road trip. It was perfect for what I needed: quiet, clean rooms and on-site parking. I can recommend the Farmer’s Market on a Thursday night and a hike up Bishop Peak. The only problem was when I went to go to Pismo Beach and it was foggy but the hostel couldn’t help that! I was happy with my stay here.

Dont book if you dont want to sleep in your car. They cancelled our room the same afternoon of our stay. A saturday of august in the West Coast. It seems that they had problems with our credit card (first time in our 2 week trip around the US) and sent us an email telling us to call them (instead of calling us). 30-40 minutes after that e mail (we dont look at our email constantly during vacation) they cancelled our room. We called them but they had already given our room to other people. Their only solution: to look for another room In booking. A Saturday. During August. The worst part is that we has booked this room months in advance, but it didn’t matter. Dont risk it.

Had looked around for cheap places to stay over the 4th of July weekend and this popped up on my radar. The hostel is in a large converted house so the place has character. I liked the location of slo it was easy to visit morro bay and the elephant seal rookery on the southern portion of pch. And a drive to Monterrey was only 2.5 hours via hwy 101. The walk to downtown took only a few minutes for those looking to eat out. Maybe the only issue is that you could not stay in the hostel all day since they locked it up for some hours and didn’t reopen until around 4:30pm

Insanely late check in hours - 5 pm is long after dark in the winter. It seems they kick all guests out during the day. It would make sense if it looked like they actually cleaned the hospital. There are older long-haired men who are either employees or long term stays, and they are kind of weird. They definitely aren't employed for cleaning - needs to be improved. 5 people packed to a small 4-person room. Old sheets and blankets and towels. Can't complain about the dinners or breakfast pancakes though.

I visited this cool place in May and can't believe I'm only now writing my review. I came here for three days on a surf/hike escapade from SF. There are very nice people running this excellent hostel, which has great proximity to local hiking trails. Easy highway access, for trips to Morro Bay. Owner was cool and let me keep my surfboard in the living room -- as my room was too small to put it in-- which no one touched. Don't be fooled by the unkempt appearance out front, it's quite charming inside. Rooms were comfortable, there was a nice lot of people staying there; well-traveled, considerate, and unpretentious. The pancake breakfast at 7:00 was just perfect. The Farmer's Market on Friday nights in downtown San Luis on the main strip is a wonderfully lively event; fantastic food, great music, local merchants selling cool stuff, all with a mellow crowd. Got lots of rest and enjoyed my stay there. I hadn't been to SLO since 1993, when I was a high school senior visiting colleges and Cal Poly was one of them. The town hasn't changed much --if at all-- since, and that was wonderful to see. For certain, I''ll be back. It's bound to be a monthly escapade in the coming months. Thanks, San Luis Obispo hostel!

I stayed here while I was driving from San Francisco to LA and I found the hostel charming. There was a very relaxed feeling to the place and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast in the morning was make your own pancakes and was a great opportunity to connect with other travellers. There were residents from all age groups staying there. The hostel is not as big as the others I have stayed in but is in a good location. The only downside for me was arriving later in the evening and having to sleep in the top bunk

A wife and mother of "mature age", I was traveling solo this trip and decided to try hosteling for the first time. Stayed the night before in San Francisco (see City Center review) which was a completely different experience. This is more like crashing at a friend of a friend's house. They took my reservation via the Contact Us link and I got a 5 person female dorm for $33 cash. Nice quiet neighborhood, older Victorian-style house with rooms named for surrounding features. You choose your own bed from those available and put your name in a little plastic sleeve attached to the bed. Do it yourself kitchen and large farm table for eating. Comfy living area. Jarred gave me great directions to nearest pharmacy and had friendly chat. I felt welcome. Free make your own pancakes in the morning. There were several families there as well as solo travelers of a variety of ages. It was more laid back, family oriented, intimate and the least "rule-laden" or hotel-like of the three hostels I visited (see also Santa Monica review). Great value for the money!
