The good bits. This hotel is in a great building in a wonderful setting with terrific views. The gardens are lovely, the staff welcoming and the food good. The bad bits. Insufficient staff led to shambolic service - they did their best and were polite and helpful there weren't enough of them. The rooms are terrible - dirty, poorly furnished,... More

The views were beautiful and we were met by very friendly staff that's where the nice ended. Our room was old, tatty, wall paper falling off, bits not even painted, paint on the bedding, damp patches, no welcome books, clocks, telephone etc. Pillows were flat and old, quilts thin and stained. Cobwebs in every corner (throughout the whole hotel), dirty... More

Stayed here for family reunion. Refurbished rooms were very good, staff helpful, chef a real character! (Food excellent). Poor wine list/stock although hotel allowed our own with small corkage charge.

The hotel is in a quiet location, set within lovely grounds and within a short distance of Castle Douglas town centre. We had two rooms, and both were very disappointing. The room we occupied had damp bedding, the mattress was in need of replacement, and it did not feel clean. Overall the decor and furniture in both rooms was looking... More

Extremely shabby room tucked at the back/basement of hotel behind two fire doors down two corridors and two flights of steps, difficult to negotiate with luggage. Mattress so old worn and uncomfortable that two blankets were required to cover the springs poking up. Wallpaper peeling . No welcoming instruction book, no telephone or alarm clock, no milk at the tea... More

Only ever saw one member of staff who was reception when we arrived and taking our breakfast order and serving breakfast the following morning. Tired decor, rooms not particulalry clean, corridoors smelling bad, no one about. We would not go back.

Room and bathroom were both spacious, bed very comfortable and clean. Food was excellent, home cooked and delicious, both dinner and breakfast (and a varied choice). Staff very friendly and helpful. Location quiet but within easy reach of any amenities you might need. Yes it is a little tired in the decoration stakes but we understand that the new owner... More

Booked with Late rooms at a cheap rate of £40.00 per single room per night. Receptionist was stood outside having a smoke on arrival with what looked like a workman, but turned out to be the chef! Shown to my room, with the green shower and sink, and well used toilet seat! The bed was comfy and beding clean and... More

We found this hotel to be extremely old fashioned but more importantly dirty and unkempt. Our bathroom was dirty and the shower head a joke. My sister in law stayed in the room next to us and she looked at her mattress, it was bably stained and marked, absolutely disgusting and turned our stomachs. We didn't have the nerve to... More

Having experienced room 17 at the Urr Valley this has to be the worst room and hotel we have ever stayed in in 50 years of world wide travalling . The whole place was dirty. (the net curtain outside our room in the corridor hung like a hammock and was full of dead flies and other insects ) The whole... More
