I almost didn't stay here, because of some of the negative reviews. But it's actually among my best overall experiences in four years of coming to Costa Rica. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for. Beautiful uncrowded hiking trails with a variety of birds--including close-up views of collared redstarts and a pair of black guans--and lovely waterfall... More

The Mirador de Quetzales is a family-run lodge high up in the middle of the Parque Nacional de Quetzales. The accommodation is homely although fairly basic compared to some other establishments. Each wooden cabin is equipped with simple shower, toilet and sink, and meals are taken in the main house, where you can also spend time relaxing by wood-burning stove,... More

The location is very nice and if seeing the Resplendant Quetzal is your goal your odds are very high here. There are also a ton of other birds to see. Especially hummingbirds up close and personal right at the feeders next to the lodge. Rustic best describes the lodging. We stayed in A frame #3 which has two single beds,... More

Plenty of blankets are provided in cabins, so no need to bring your own. Nevertheless, I did sleep in ALL my layers: t-shirt, long-sleeved t-shirt, sweatshirt, and oversized hooded sweatshirt (hood up), under 5 blankets, with the hot water bottle. It was down in the 40s overnight. The showers are tricky. To get to Barely Warm Enough you have to... More

We got lucky because the whole place was empty so we got a discount (even if it's still expensive...) but we paid 40$/p for Diner, Night, Breakfast, and tour in the morning to get to see the birds. (And we did.) Yes the room is cold at night but they gave us hot water bags, and extra sheets and blankets... More

First of all: Before you stay, find out the price and pay in advance. We were charged double the price that we were originally given - $120 per night for two people is too much when you are staying in a simple, very basic mountain cabin, even if the (not too big) meals in the morning at at night are... We stayed here one night. It's located above 8000 feet, so it gets really cold at night. If you stay here make sure to bring warm pjs and perhaps an extra 5 blankets. The cabins aren't heated, but they do provide warm blankets. The showers are heated by and electric contraption that warms up the cold mountain water only marginally.... More

The family that runs this small finca/cabina couldn't be friendlier, but this is not the destination for those who are not serious birders. The place is set back from the Cerda de Muerte 'just about' far enough to not hear the vehicles on the road but you can hear the larger trucks as they barrel along the highway. This place... More

One of our best place in Costa Rica. It's a family hotel. You don' t penetrate it intimacy but you feel the unity and their love for their place. The best service is the morning walk, included in the price. You follow invisible ways through the forest trying to spot the quetzal. Believe me you couldn' t do this alone!... More

As another reviewer wrote, the food isn't very great, the rooms are cold and basic, didn't dare to shower because it was too chilly the whole time we were there.....but somehow this place still has charm. You can feel the history of the pioneer Serrano family when you stay. The grandsons are now running the quetzal watching and these cabins.... More
