Uemura Kyoto Our 6th visit to this small Ryokan warmly run by the gentile Madam Uemura for the past 54 years. It's located in the atmospheric side streets of old Kyoto near Kodai-Ji temple. An easy 5 minute walk to say Gion corner and a gentle 10 minute stroll to the magnificent Chion-In temple. Her property is always very clean.It... More

Ryokan Uemura is a delightful little place, right in the middle of a dreamy district of lovely Kyoto. All the problems mentioned in other reviews are true: it is a bit rough around the edges, the toilets (shared!) are spotless but a bit dingy, it is a bit cold at night and yes, it feels expensive for the kind of... We chose this ryokan because of the good reviews on Tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. Mrs Uemura was so accommodating and helpful. The first night we were there, we didn't know about the 10pm curfew and came back close to 11pm. She was waiting up for us and didn't say a thing! It's only later that we saw the... More

This place is GREAT. Mrs Uemura has the rare gift of genuine Japanese hospitality, and just makes you feel so at home. Every encounter with her was sweet as pie. The location simply cannot be beat...right smack in the middle of the coolest old Kyoto has to offer. The only knock, and this is just a personal thing, is that... More

Written by my ten-year-old son, who found it genuinely hard to say goodbye to our hostess when we left (even though she speaks no more than ten words of English): Mrs. Uemora is a kind, warm person who keeps her ryokan clean and happy-looking. Her hospitality is amazing; she shined my mom's shoes, made us an American breakfast without us... More

We loved Ryokan Uemura. The booking process was seamless as we were able to contact Mrs Uemura through fax and subsequently through e-mail (someone helped her send the reply e-mail to us). We loved the experience of staying in a japanese household firsthand, and Mrs Uemura is an amazing host. Although her English is fairly limited, she does her best... More

My fiancee and I were both coming off of trips for work and we decided to meet up in Kyoto. In that we are both very busy and we were just looking for a weekend reunion getaway, initially we were going to just give in and let a travel service book us at a mega-hotel near the JR station. Luckily,... More

This is lovely place to stay, in one of the most beautiful parts of Kyoto, which may explain why isn't not dirt cheap. It is affordable, simple and clean accommodation. There is a slightly scornful review by one person who stayed there (during the winter) and while I agree that it is not advisable to stay in such a ryokan... More

We stayed with Ms. Uemura for a few days in January and had a wonderful time. She is the sweetest and most kind lady. The location is fantastic. Quiet and still close to everything you want to experience in Kyoto. We will stay with Ms. Uemura again whenever we have the chance. A truly great place to stay.

Just back from the Ryokan today and I have to say after reading all of the hyped up reviews we were terribly disappointed. Basically, if you want to pay top dollar to sleep on the floor in your parents igloo this is the place to go. We were there in winter (Jan) and these Ryokans are not built for the... More
