My son and I stayed at Waraku-an in mid June 2011. The rooms now have air conditioning (and I suspect heating as well) which addresses some of the concerns expressed elsewhere. The place has a nice cozy, backpackerish vibe and has a great location - good food / gift shopping options close by and a quick bus ride / walk... More

We arrived in Kyoto a bit tired and confused, so caught a cab to Waraku An. We showed the driver a map and he indicated that he knew exactly where we wanted to go. He then drove us to completely the wrong hotel, then drove off before we could get all our bags out of the car, taking all our... More

This is one of the best guesthouses that I have ever been in, the staff is really nice and are always there to help you. The breakfast is really good, it is a kind of mixture between the japanese and europan cuisine, defenitely give it a shot! This guesthouse can help you with anything, they rent bycicles, they give you... More

I stayed at a dorm room for 2 nights in early November. I must admit the house was creaking, the room was small, the bathroom was tiny, and the restroom was off limit for the stenophobia. Yet if you want to get a taste of traditional Japanese lifestyle when people were much shorter and more modest, this place gives you... More

This place isn't for everyone, but if you're interested in a traditional Japanese inn where you sleep on the floor, leave your shoes at the door, and share bathroom facilities, this place is reasonable and in a good neighborhood, next to the Kyoto Handicrafts Center and near the Imperial Palace. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the inn was... More

I stayed here with my Husband in Jan 2009. We came to visit my Husband's family and stayed for just one night. The price was very cheap at ¥6,000 a night for a two person room. A bargain! Its perfect for young backpackers with not a lot of cash, who want to avoid hostels. The entrance way was lovely and... More

One bus ride from the JR Kyoto train station. Short walk (2 half blocks) from bus stop. Great location near the Handicraft Center & Heian Shrine, supermarket on the corner, drugstore and bus stops in front of supermarket and around the corner. Lovely little garden in center of the house. Stairs quite steep and no handrails; not for elderly or... More
